Job summary

NMS Recruit Ltd t/a Russell Taylor Group is seeking a Senior Protection & Control Engineer for a 12-month contract in Glasgow. The role involves end-to-end P&C engineering across UK transmission and distribution networks, with responsibility for designs, relay settings and commissioning activities.

The position is inside IR35 and offers a flexible Glasgow-based contract. You will work across concepts through to client-facing design reviews, applying IEC 61850 and OT cyber security

Qualifications

• Significant end-to-end P&C engineering experience across Transmission/Distribution networks.
• Strong knowledge of protection philosophies and HV substation interfaces.
• Experience with IEC 61850, GOOSE messaging and substation architectures.
• Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field required.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and contribute to P&C designs (SLDs, KLDs, concept designs).
• Produce schematics, arrangements, schedules and system architectures.
• Write Functional Design Specifications and test documentation.
• Develop relay settings and protection coordination studies.
• Test relays and bay solutions, including client witness testing.
• Apply IEC 61850 principles and substation communication architectures.
• Incorporate IEC 62443 OT cyber security considerations.
• Deliver work packages on time, cost, quality and safety metrics.
• Support site visits, testing and commissioning activities.
• Assist Lead Engineers in meetings and design reviews.

Senior Protection & Control Engineer - Contract Glasgow (Flexible)

What will you be doing?

• Preparing and contributing to Protection & Control designs, including SLDs, KLDs and concept designs
• Producing schematics, general arrangements, schedules, calculations and system architectures
• Writing Functional Design Specifications, Design Intent Documents, compliance matrices and test documentation
• Developing and reviewing relay settings and supporting protection coordination studies
• Preparing relay configurations and files, and testing relays and bay solutions, including client witness testing
• Applying IEC 61850 principles, including GOOSE messaging, SCL files and substation communication architectures
• Factoring OT cyber security requirements (IEC 62443) into designs
• Delivering engineering work packages to agreed time, cost, quality and safety requirements
• Carrying out site visits and non-intrusive surveys, and supporting installation, testing and commissioning
• Supporting client meetings, technical workshops and design reviews alongside Lead Engineers

Where you'll be doing it?

Our client is an independent system integrator with decades of experience delivering critical projects across energy, water, renewables and manufacturing. Because they aren't tied to any one vendor, their engineers work across a wide range of platforms, architectures and standards, and get genuine ownership of solutions from start to finish. They have a long-standing relationship with National Grid going back more than 20 years, and also support DNOs, renewable developers and new entrants to the energy market. You'll be supporting the delivery of UK Transmission and Distribution projects.

What you'll need:

• Significant experience delivering end-to-end Protection & Control engineering across Transmission and/or Distribution networks
• Strong knowledge of protection philosophies, protection schemes, HV substation arrangements and system interfaces
• Good knowledge of UK standards and client specifications (ENA, IEC, BS, National Grid TP series, DNO standards)
• Hands-on experience with numerical relay platforms from GE, Siemens, SEL, Schneider or equivalent
• Practical experience implementing IEC 61850, including architecture design and GOOSE messaging
• Hands-on testing of Protection & Control solutions using industry standard tools
• The ability to produce and review P&C designs and documentation to a high standard
• Confidence representing engineering in client meetings and design reviews
• A degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline (or significant relevant experience)
• A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to project and client sites
