Job summary

AECOM in the United Kingdom is seeking an experienced Senior Protection & Control Design Engineer to lead HV/EHV substation protection design. You will develop protection schemes, SLDs, wiring diagrams and interfaces across multi-disciplinary teams.

The role requires proficiency with protection relays from major manufacturers, strong communication skills, and a track record delivering compliant designs to IEC/IEEE standards. Join us to shape critical energy infrastructure.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent.
• Extensive HV/EHV substation protection & control design experience.
• Knowledge of protection schemes for transmission and distribution.
• Experience with protection relays from major manufacturers (Siemens, GE, ABB/Hitachi Energy, Schneider Electric, SEL).
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

• Prepare protection and control designs for HV/EHV substations (11kV–400kV).
• Develop protection/Schematic drawings and wiring diagrams.
• Design protection relay panels, control panels, annunciation, and RTU/SCADA interfaces.
• Prepare relay settings philosophy and coordinate with studies.
• Perform protection coordination and review relay configurations.
• Prepare engineering calculations, cable sizing, voltage drop, and battery sizing.
• Coordinate with Civil, Primary, Telecom, and SCADA teams.
• Review vendor drawings for conformance to specs.
• Support FAT, SAT, commissioning and issue resolution.
• Ensure designs meet IEC, IEEE, National Grid and client standards.
• Support project execution with quality, safety, and schedule adherence.

Due to an exciting period of growth we are looking to hire an experienced Senior Protection & Control Design Engineer. This is a fantastic opportunity to work on the design of High Voltage (HV) and Extra High Voltage (EHV) substations and hold responsibility for developing protection and control system designs, preparing engineering deliverables, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring compliance with client specifications and international standards.

• Prepare Protection & Control engineering designs for HV/EHV substations (11kV–400kV or above)
• Develop Protection Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), AC/DC Schematics, Wiring Diagrams, Terminal Plans, Cable Schedules, and Interconnection Diagrams
• Design Protection Relay Panels, Control Panels, Annunciation Panels, Metering Panels, and RTU/SCADA interfaces
• Prepare Protection Relay Settings philosophy and coordinate with system studies where applicable
• Perform protection coordination and review relay configurations
• Prepare engineering calculations, cable sizing, voltage drop calculations, and battery sizing (where applicable)
• Coordinate with Civil, Primary, Telecom, and SCADA engineering teams
• Review vendor drawings and ensure compliance with project specifications
• Support FAT, SAT, commissioning, and technical issue resolution
• Ensure designs comply with IEC, IEEE, National Grid, and client-specific standards
• Support project execution by meeting quality, safety, and schedule requirements
