About the role
Balfour Beatty currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Project Manager to join our UKCS Construction teams, playing a key role in our converter station project on the Isle Of Lewis.
Accountable for a strategic package of the delivery of a convertor station
including initiation, planning, design, delivery, monitoring, commissioning and
handover/closeout for these key work packages.
The converter station project in Lewis is part of SSEN Transmission's Western Isles HVDC (High-Voltage Direct Current) project, aimed at connecting the Western Isles to mainland Scotland to support renewable energy integration, particularly from offshore wind. This initiative falls under SSEN Transmission's broader Pathway to 2030 program, which seeks to upgrade the electricity transmission network in northern Scotland to meet net-zero targets by 2030. The project involves constructing a new HVDC converter station on Lewis, which will connect via a mainland cable route to another proposed substation and converter station at Fanellan, near Beauly.
Successful candidate will be based at our Maxim Park office at Eurocentral in Motherwell initially during ECI stage with frequent site visits to Lewis and Peterhead required.
What you'll be doing
Governance
• Support the Project Director with fortnightly project reviews and formal monthly one (PRM) and update the Digital Briefcase in accordance with GBL.
• Prepare both internal/external reports and liaise with stakeholders
Analytical Thinking and Decision Making
• Ensures adherence to scope/information/configuration management plans
• Ensure reports provide relevant information which enables decisions to be made which are informed, cost effective and in line with overall strategy
• Ensure scope and package assignment supports the team in coordinated working
Health, Safety and Environmental
• Lead a relentless focus on Zero Harm & keep up to date with changes in legislation
• Responsible for the safety and welfare of the general public, employees and supply chain
• Carry out periodic Safety & Environmental Tours/promote observation and safety initiatives
• Support Accident/Incident Investigations
• Monitor effectiveness of the H&S Management System and implement improvement solutions
Resources & Development
• Develop, implement and update resource allocation plans (OBS) and raise appropriate requests Leadership/Line Management
• Produce plans for the team to achieve goals/aspirations
• Develop high performing teams, promote a pipeline of talent and assist with internal training through supporting, guiding, motivating and empowering the team. Using the resources available through training, mentoring and performance management
• Coach and provide guidance to the Project Manager
Risk, Issue and Opportunity
• Lead risk/opportunity reviews, present the Risk Register and recommend/implement changes
• Log and escalate any issues that cannot be resolved at delegated level of authority
Procurement & Supply Chain
• Take a strategic view of subcontract package allocation and ensure contractual arrangements are in place
• Ensure procurement plans are available in line with the overall project plans, such that material/resources/supply chain can be delivered to meet scheduled deadlines
Quality
• Ensure all work is undertaken with a view towards handover and certification
• Accountable for KPI's in line with project objectives and monitor performance
• Ensure assurance activities (audits) are undertaken and take appropriate action on findings
• Lead working groups and work with OLT on focused improvement areas
Programme/Schedule
Produce and monitor Programme, P6 format in conjunction with SSEN on a monthly basis
• Develop, implement, review and periodically update resource loaded schedules • Ensure team adopt productivity and project controls techniques
• Ensure production of operational milestones reflect master schedule and customer expectations
Commercial & Contract
• Ensure that expenditure is in line with the budget and that resources are utilised efficiently to ensure cost control
• Able to identify elements for cost recovery from others
• Incorporate and balance both operational and commercial constraints into decision making
• Lead effective reporting routines including escalation as required
Digital
• Advocate consistency and reliability of digital data to support successful project delivery - data driven decisions. 4D modelling
• Awareness of Digital Group Minimum Standards and operate with appropriate level of digital tools
• Seek coaching so that the team has the correct level of training
Who we're looking for
The following qualities/experience are essential:
• Able to demonstrate a track record of project delivery in large scale projects
• NEC experience • Commissioning experience
• Joint Venture experience working with other contractors/parts of the same business
• Experience in implementing safe systems of work
• Good understanding of the standard forms of contracts
• Proficient in commercial/project management communications
• Able to communicate effectively both verbal and written with all levels of the organisation
• Effective team management skills which empower, influence & inspire others to build effective teams. Providing mentoring and support to members of the team where required
• Commercially astute • Able to undertake work in high pressure situations
• Good knowledge of performance evaluation techniques and key metrics
• A record of a solutions based approach to problem solving
• The ability to see the business vision and inspire this shared vision amongst the team
• CDE and BIM experience
The following qualities/experience are desirable:
• Experience of working on a variety of project types
• Is a member of a professional management body i.e. APM, RICS, CIOB, ICE
• Proficient on O365, P6, Asta
• Holds a current driving license
• Attend and contribute to industry events The role holder is likely to have one or more of the following:
• Holds a formal qualification (BSc/MSc) in management/construction or experience equivalent
• Holds either the APM PFQ/PMQ/PPQ
• Holds CSCS and SMSTS or Equivalent
