Job description

Description:

Senior Process Engineer

(interviewing now)

Contract Type: Full-time

At Equisera, you’ll help build one of the world’s first commercially deployable carbon-negative energy technologies, tackling some of the hardest engineering challenges in the global energy transition. Our breakthrough RiPR (Rising Pressure Reformer) process converts wet biogenic feedstocks, including agricultural and food waste and even plastics, into high-yield hydrogen and biomethane with minimal pre-processing. The process simultaneously captures carbon dioxide and produces biochar, delivering a truly carbon-negative energy solution.

Backed by significant private investment, government innovation funding and strategic industry partnerships, you will be joining us at a pivotal stage as we deliver our first commercial-scale plant. You’ll join a small, passionate, high-impact team helping shape the future of carbon-negative energy.

The Role

Reporting to the Chief Engineer, you will lead Equisera’s multidisciplinary engineering design team. You will define how RiPR is engineered into safe, operable and commercially viable process plants while leading concept development, detailed design, procurement, commissioning and continuous improvement.

Why this role is different

Unlike many engineering roles, this is not a desk-bound design position. At our purpose-built innovation campus, engineering, laboratories and manufacturing sit under one roof, giving you the opportunity to take ideas from first principles through laboratory validation, pilot plant and ultimately commercial deployment.

Key Responsibilities
  • You will develop the process engineering systems that underpin RiPR as it progresses from research and development to commercial deployment.
  • You will oversee chemical and mechanical engineers to define process requirements; support equipment selection; ensure that decisions are supported by robust analysis and sound engineering judgement and develop integrated process plant designs that are safe, practical and cost-effective to build and operate. The role will involve leading the design efforts, reviewing and approving designs, supplier engagement, procurement, commissioning activities and operational troubleshooting, and mentoring the junior members of the team. You will contribute to the continuous improvement of RiPR, engineering processes and standards as the business grows.
About You
  • Undergraduate or masters degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Significant industrial experience in process engineering within relevant process industries.
  • Experience in sectors such as hydrogen, gas processing, renewable fuels, waste-to-energy, chemical manufacturing, petrochemical or oil and gas.
  • Experience working to a systems engineering design process.
  • Experience of delivering FEED (Front End Engineering Design)
  • Experience working with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience developing process designs including mass balances, energy balances and equipment sizing calculations.
  • Experience producing and reviewing PFDs, P&IDs, process datasheets and engineering calculations.
  • Experience using Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of engineering standards including PED, ASME, DSEAR, PSSR and relevant pressure equipment codes.
  • Experience participating in HAZOPs, design reviews and process safety activities.
  • Understanding of process plant equipment including pumps, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, piping systems and instrumentation.
  • Experience of reviewing and approving engineering deliverables.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Comfortable working within a fast-paced development environment.
  • Experience managing a multidisciplinary team of engineers.
  • Experience supporting pilot plant, demonstration plant or first-of-a-kind technology projects.
  • Experience within hydrogen, biomethane, renewable fuels, waste-to-energy or carbon capture industries.
  • Experience with pressure systems, gas processing or thermal process technologies.
  • Experience of the whole product development lifecycle from concept, to commissioning and through to operation.
  • Experience supporting commissioning, testing and operational troubleshooting activities.
  • Experience working within R&D or scale-up environments.
Why Join Us?
  • Join an ambitious scale-up at the forefront of the climate tech revolution.
  • Collaborate with a team of passionate professionals in an innovative and supportive environment.
  • Play a key role in scaling groundbreaking carbon-negative technologies.
  • This is an opportunity to become one of the engineering leaders of a company taking breakthrough technology from laboratory development to first commercial deployment.
Company Benefits
  • Share options, giving you the opportunity to benefit from the long-term success and growth of the business
  • Opportunity for flexible working hours (8hrs within a 7am to 7pm window)
  • Salary sacrifice EV car scheme, giving you access to a new electric vehicle at a significantly reduced cost
  • Annual leave: 33 days annual leave (including bank holidays)
  • Your birthday off as an extra day of leave
  • Participation in the company’s standard pension scheme with a 5% contribution
  • Company off-site team building days
  • Access to company e-bikes for commuting or leisure use
  • Career growth supported by training, development, and compliance programmes

Applicants must have the right to work in the UK. We are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role.

We are committed to building a fair, inclusive and supportive working environment where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. STEM has long been less diverse than it should be, and we want to be part of changing that – because bringing together different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives is how we solve hard problems in cleantech. Recruitment decisions are made on skills, potential and values alignment. We actively encourage applications from people of all backgrounds and experiences, and we work to remove barriers so we can attract, support and retain the best talent. We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every qualification listed. Strong candidates rarely meet every criterion, and research shows that people from underrepresented groups are more likely to experience imposter syndrome and to doubt the strength of their application. Please do not rule yourself out too early – if this work interests you, we would like to hear from you.

If you require any adjustments during the interview process, or have specific needs in your working style, please let us know when you apply. We will always do our best to accommodate you.

We believe in an environment where diverse perspectives are celebrated and collaboration is the norm.
