Job summary

The Ministry of Justice within the National Probation Service seeks a Senior Probation Officer to lead a Local Delivery Unit, guiding staff, ensuring good practice, and delivering contract obligations with HMPPS and CRCs. The role requires strong leadership, risk assessment, and effective resource management in a hybrid working environment.

You will drive performance, develop staff, uphold public protection standards, and champion diversity and inclusion while coordinating with partner agencies

Qualifications

• Substantial experience with good practice in offender risk assessment and management
• Understanding of Probation Service role in CJ system and multi-disciplinary settings
• Experience of risk management and multi-agency procedures
• Evidence of evaluating practice and providing policy perspectives
• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
• Ability to interpret and apply performance reports

Responsibilities

• Provide effective management and leadership to the team
• Ensure quality delivery of good practice and performance improvements
• Deploy resources cost-effectively and meet budget targets
• Ensure staff meet contract requirements with HMPPS, CRCs and local plans
• Interpret and apply performance data to maximise team performance
• Develop staff and address underperformance and health and safety issues
• Ensure offender managers manage risk and meet public protection standards
• Contribute to safeguarding duties and multi-agency collaboration
• Promote innovation and continuous service improvement
• Manage area budget and authorise expenditure within limits
• Lead partnerships and represent NPS to external stakeholders
• Facilitate effective internal-external communications
• Participate in LDU/Operational Unit management team
• Accept reasonable alterations and additional tasks as needed
