Job summary

The Ministry of Justice through the National Probation Service seeks a Senior Probation Officer to lead a Local Delivery Unit, manage staff and resources, and ensure high standards of probation delivery. The role requires balancing performance with safeguarding and multi-agency collaboration.

You will lead and develop staff, interpret data, manage budgets, and work with partners to meet contractual and policy standards while upholding equality and inclusion throughout the service.

Qualifications

• Substantial experience with a proven record of good practice in a variety of settings (including offender risk assessment and management) as a Probation Officer or from working within another criminal justice agency or related work context.
• Understanding of the role of the Probation Service in the Criminal Justice System and in a multi-disciplinary setting.
• Knowledge of factors influencing engagement with victims.
• Experience of risk management and assessment, including multi-agency procedures.
• Ability to evaluate practice and provide a policy development perspective.
• Experience of working under pressure and meeting challenging deadlines.
• Experience of contributing to administration and information systems.

Responsibilities

• Provide effective management and leadership to the team.
• Be accountable for quality delivery of good practice and team performance within policy and standards.
• Ensure resources and interventions are deployed cost-effectively to meet strategic aims.
• Ensure staff can meet contractual requirements with partners and local plans.
• Analyse performance data to maximise team performance and evaluat e practice.
• Develop staff, handle underperformance, attendance and health and safety matters.
• Manage offender risk and contribute to public protection through multi-agency work.
• Promote innovation and continuous improvement in service delivery.
• Manage financial resources within established regulations and authorise expenditure within limits.
• Represent the NPS with partners and stakeholders as required.
• Facilitate communication between management and internal/external partners.
• Participate in corporate management as part of the Unit Management Team.
• Carry out safeguarding duties and adhere to policies.
