At Leonardo, we have a fantastic new opportunity for a Senior/Principal Mechanical Engineer working in the development of Missile Seeker solutions for state-of-the-art missile seeker systems; the projects range from low Technology Readiness Level (TRL) research tasks through to in-service systems being delivered to our partners in the UK and beyond.
Much of the work within this team is at a high classification level and therefore requires regular attendance at our Essex facility. Depending on projects, this role allows a mixture of on-site and remote working.
Applicants must be eligible to meet full UK Security Clearance and ITAR.

Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required
- A minimum of an upper second class degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar), or
- Equivalent experience in the field of Defence, Airborne or naval environments. Mechanical engineering for Electronic and/or EO products
- Design of systems for ‘harsh environments’ i.e., Shock, Vibration, Temperature, EMC, Salt fog, etc.
- Mechanical design and development using 3D CAD tools (ideally PTC Creo).
- Problem solving using a structured, logical approach to investigate issues and problems effectively.
- Understanding Structural and Thermal Analyses data to inform design decisions.
- Experience in various aspects of DfX, including Manufacturing, Assembly, Test, Integration, and Sustainability.
- MEng in Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience within the IR spectrum for EO Systems.
- Model Based Design methods and tools (e.g., MathWorks).
- Capable of producing ‘first pass’ (structural and thermal) analyses to determine if a design is fit-for-purpose, e.g., using PTC Simulate, flow, or similar.
- Knowledge of current industry trends in Mechanical Engineering, including new tools, techniques, and technologies.
Key Responsibility Areas
- Support the Project Team in delivering technical solutions on critical Business programmes, ensuring Mechanical Engineering excellence.
- Ensure compliance of Mechanical Engineering solutions throughout the entire Engineering Lifecycle, considering all requirements including quality, safety, reliability, testability, and sustainability.
- Research and develop mechanical solutions and techniques that enable the team to advance missile seeker technology, including new product capabilities and manufacturing techniques for extreme environments or cost reduction.
- Mechanical Engineering detailed design, including calculations and tolerance studies.
- Produce Manufacturing Data Packs in line with BS8888, including GD&T.
- Support resolution of technical problems and contribute to design reviews.
- Involve practically in development builds and Design of Experiments.
- Support the introduction of new products into the development/production lifecycle.
- Manage Work Package delivery to meet Quality, Schedule, and Cost targets.
