Job description

Job Description

Are you a Mechanical Design Engineer who thrives on solving difficult engineering problems? Are you drawn to complex projects and excited by the opportunity to rapidly progress your technical leadership skills to the next level, heading up multi-disciplinary projects?

If so, you might enjoy solving the energy industry’s most important mechanical engineering conundrums for a multitude of energy systems across various clients. You could be managing projects designing test rigs to support the UK’s nuclear fusion development, conducting structural integrity assessments of primary plant for civil and defence applications, designing high-integrity structures for new nuclear facilities, or leading renewable energy projects within a growing carbon net zero portfolio. You’ll likely be juggling several projects simultaneously, so adaptability is essential! The constant is the complex nature of these jobs and the opportunity to provide innovative solutions to a range of client challenges.

Whichever energy-related projects you participate in, you'll be engaged in developing engineering solutions to industry’s most challenging problems, contributing significantly to the UK’s energy and environmental security.

If you are a self-starter capable of delivering multiple projects, working closely with clients and internal teams to capture requirements, initiate projects, and deliver right-first-time solutions, then we encourage you to apply.

Learn more about how you can thrive with us.

Role Requirements:

You will deliver projects, lead teams and programs, or work directly with our clients embedded in their major projects. To benefit from the collective experience of our team and clients, and to foster innovative thinking, you’ll work in a collaborative and supportive environment at least half of your working week. You will bring sound commercial awareness when supervising teams to ensure tasks are delivered on time, within scope, and within budget.

Your work will be diverse and challenging, including overseeing and verifying code-compliant calculations, reviewing and approving technical documents, managing design activities (CAD designs and drawings), and liaising with project managers and directors on commercial matters and bids.

We succeed by working closely with our clients, matching our skills to their needs, being flexible, and efficiently utilizing our resources. Whether delivering engineering services or program management, our goal is always to provide the right solution for our clients.

  • Degree qualified mechanical engineer or relevant qualification.
  • Experience with design codes such as ASME, Eurocodes, BS EN13001, RCC-M, and HS&E legislation.
  • Experience in requirements gathering, including functional, non-functional, stakeholder, and regulatory needs.
  • Experience overseeing optioneering studies for design solutions.
  • Experience reviewing mechanical engineering substantiation for new or existing plant.
  • Experience in preparing and reviewing technical reports (design calculations, safety case reports, etc.).
  • Ability to liaise, present, and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Proven track record of leading successful engineering projects with varied team sizes.
  • Experience with delivery accountability for mechanical engineering solutions.

Please indicate if you have experience in any of the following (but still apply if you are eager to gain experience):

  • Writing or authoring bids in safety-critical, regulated environments.
  • Nuclear industry knowledge and safety case understanding.
  • Hazard/fault studies (e.g., HAZOP, FMEA).
  • Chartered status or nearing application with a relevant professional institute.
