Qualifications

  • Work both in teams and independently to ensure delivery on time, budget, and quality.

Overview

The AtkinsRéalis Traffic Control Systems (TCS) team works across the transport sector to help clients navigate a rapidly changing world, linking current traffic signals and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) with future‑focused technology opportunities. They undertake design, implementation, consultancy and advisory projects for a broad set of UK and international clients, including the Department for Transport, National Highways and local authorities.

Your role

As a Senior Traffic Control Systems Engineer, you will be a key part of a dynamic team, leading world‑class projects for clients across the UK. Your work will help improve journeys, promote safety and support a healthier, more sustainable environment while advancing traffic control technology and mobility.

  • Lead and supervise delivery of traffic signal and ITS schemes from inception to operation, including detailed design, FAT, SAT and validation.
  • Engage with clients to provide technical advice, develop opportunities and progress project delivery.
  • Assist, guide and develop less experienced staff on technical delivery and project management.
  • Deliver and review high‑quality technical reports and presentations.
  • Demonstrate commercial knowledge, including preparation of cost estimates and scopes.
  • Direct and manage projects, monitor budgets, identify risks and resolve issues.
  • Work both as part of a team and independently, ensuring delivery to budget, time and quality.
About You

We are looking for a self‑motivated, ambitious, and analytical engineer with enthusiasm for delivering projects in the traffic signals sector. You should have:

  • In‑depth knowledge of design processes and best practice for traffic signals, highways design and signal operation.
  • Experience leading feasibility, preliminary and detailed design activities, and developing construction packages for client tenders.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills and the ability to implement innovative solutions.
  • Proven ability to learn new skills, understand complex technical projects and identify new opportunities.
  • Strong communication skills, including presentations and client meetings, and the ability to build positive client relationships.
  • Experience delivering outputs across multiple projects and leading small project teams.
  • Strong awareness of health and safety issues, CDM.
  • Either already a member of or keen to become a member of a relevant professional institute; we provide opportunities for professional registration and chartership.
