AtkinsRéalis UK Limited is seeking a Traffic Control Systems Engineer to join our ITI practice. Based from one of our offices in Bristol, Birmingham, Epsom or Nottingham, the role offers hybrid working and potential short-term travel across the UK and overseas.

You will deliver high-quality traffic signal and ITS projects, provide technical advice to clients, and guide junior staff while developing a broad range of design and operation skills in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver Traffic Signal and ITS schemes from inception to operation, including detailed design and validation.
  • Liaise with clients to provide technical advice, develop opportunities, and progress delivery.
  • Guide less experienced staff on technical delivery and project management.
  • Prepare high-quality technical reports and presentations.
  • Develop commercial knowledge, including cost estimates and scopes.
  • Monitor budgets and project risks, ensuring delivery within time, budget and quality.
  • Work both as part of a team and independently, coordinating with others.

Job Description Overview

The AtkinsRéalis’ Traffic Control Systems (TCS) teamwork across the transport sector helping our clients navigate a rapidly changing world, linking current Traffic Signals and Intelligent Transport Systems with future-focused technology opportunities. The team undertake a variety of design, implementation, consultancy and advisory projects to a broad set of UK and international clients in the transport sector, including the Department for Transport, National Highways, and UK local authorities. The team sits within the Intelligent Transport & Infrastructure (ITI) practice, which is part of AtkinsRéalis' UK Transportation business and is the home of our transport technology, asset management, and digital/data capabilities, delivering joined up, data driven solutions that improve transport network performance and outcomes for clients and communities. ITI comprises staff from a range of disciplines facing into a range of clients, with approximately 15 TCS staff providing market leading capability in traffic signals, Urban Traffic Control (UTC) and operations. TCS, along with the wider IMST practice, blend projects utilising traffic signals, motorway control systems, toll road systems and smart ticketing with thinking and advice on emerging trends and growing areas such as digital highways, Mobility-as-a-Service, Connected Vehicles and AI.

Your role

As a Traffic Control Systems Engineer, you will form a key part in our dynamic team, delivering high-quality world class projects to Clients across the UK. You will help to improve people's journeys, promote safety and work towards a more healthy and sustainable environment, as well as building the future of traffic control, transport technology and mobility. Based from one of our offices in Bristol, Birmingham, Epsom or Nottingham this role offers hybrid working. There may be some developing of schemes both across the UK and overseas and therefore it could necessitate the need for short term travel.

Key areas of responsibility
  • Undertaking the successful delivery of Traffic Signal and ITS schemes from inception to operation, including detailed design, FAT, SAT and validation.
  • Liaison with clients to provide technical advice and solutions, develop opportunities and progress project delivery.
  • Assist and guide less experienced staff on technical delivery and project management.
  • Delivering high quality technical reports and presentations.
  • Developing commercial knowledge and understanding, including preparation of cost estimates and scopes.
  • Undertaking projects management tasks, including monitoring budgets, actively raising project risks and resolving issues.
  • Working both as part of a team and individually, monitoring own project work and work of others to ensure delivery to budget, time and quality.
About you

Are you self-motivated with ambition and creativity? Analytical and enjoy problem solving? We’re looking for someone with developing technical knowledge and enthusiasm for delivering projects in the traffic signals sector, who has:

  • Knowledge of design processes and best practice, traffic signals / highways design and traffic signal operation.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and able to develop and demonstrate innovative solutions and processes.
  • Proven ability to learn new skills, understand complex technical projects and seek out new opportunities.
  • Good communication skills, including presentations and client meetings, and effective at developing positive working relationships.
  • Ability to deliver outputs on multiple projects for various clients.
  • Strong awareness of Health and Safety issues and CDM.
  • Either already a member of or keen to become a member of a relevant Professional Institute and obtain professional registration, we’ll provide opportunities to personal development and achieving professional registration, leading to Chartership.
