Job description

Exciting new opportunity to join the Pre & Post Birth Team as a dedicated and experienced Senior Practitioner in Ilford. The Senior Practitioner in the Pre & Post Birth Team will take responsibility for complex cases and undertake specific tasks, responsibilities, and supervision where deemed appropriate by the Team Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a caseload of complex pre- and post-birth cases, conducting thorough assessments and implementing effective interventions.
  • Provide early intervention and support to expectant parents to address risks and ensure a safe and nurturing environment for newborns.
  • Undertake pre-birth assessments, contributing to child protection plans and legal proceedings where necessary.
  • Work closely with midwives, health visitors, family support workers, and other professionals to develop multi-agency plans that prioritise infant well-being.
  • Support parents in accessing services such as mental health support, substance misuse treatment, and domestic abuse interventions to reduce risks.
  • Offer guidance and mentoring to junior social workers, providing case consultations and supporting professional development.
  • Chair multi-agency meetings and contribute to care planning, ensuring timely and appropriate interventions.
  • Promote strength-based, family-focused approaches to enable parents to make positive changes.
  • Maintain accurate, high-quality records and reports in line with legal and organisational requirements.
  • Participate in service development, identifying areas for improvement and contributing to best practice initiatives.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Qualifications: A recognised social work qualification (BA, MA, DipSW or equivalent) and current registration with Social Work England.
  • Experience: Significant post-qualification experience in children’s social care, particularly within a safeguarding or assessment context. Previous experience in a senior or supervisory role is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of relevant legislation, including the Children Act 1989, Working Together to Safeguard Children, and other statutory guidance related to safeguarding and child welfare.
  • Skills: Excellent communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills, with the ability to engage effectively with children, families, and multi-agency professionals. Strong report-writing abilities are essential.
  • Empathy: A compassionate and child-centred approach, with a commitment to promoting the rights and welfare of vulnerable children and families.
  • Teamwork: Proven ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team, building positive relationships with colleagues and partner agencies.
  • Technology: Proficient in using electronic case management systems and other IT tools for maintaining records and reporting.
