Job description

Our client is an international organisation providing high-quality protection across a broad range of personal and commercial risks. The organisation is committed to excellent service, inclusive collaboration and continuously improving how it supports customers and colleagues.

Its data function is transforming organisational data maturity through data, analytics and artificial intelligence. The team promotes data fluency and insight-led decision-making, working across data engineering, data product, data management, visualisation and data science.

This hybrid role is based in York. It is an opportunity to join a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment where governed, reusable and user-focused reporting products are central to better business outcomes.

End-to-end Power BI product ownership

As Senior Power BI Developer, you will own the complete lifecycle of complex, business-critical Power BI products. This will include discovery, solution design, development, testing, deployment, production support, rationalisation and continuous improvement.

You will translate business questions into intuitive, reliable and reusable reporting experiences, balancing usability, performance, security and maintainability.

You will work closely with stakeholders to understand their needs, challenge unnecessary complexity and avoid creating duplicated or one-off solutions.

You will also ensure that reporting products have clear ownership, transparent measures and an active improvement lifecycle.

Semantic modelling and technical development

You will design and optimise scalable semantic and dimensional models, using advanced DAX and Power Query to deliver robust reporting solutions.

Strong SQL capability and an understanding of modern data platforms, pipelines and curated data layers will be essential.

You will determine where transformation logic should sit across the data and reporting layers, ensuring that solutions are performant, maintainable and appropriately governed.

You will diagnose and resolve performance bottlenecks across models, queries and reports.

The role requires advanced hands-on Power BI development experience, including complex semantic models and multi-stakeholder reporting.

Experience with Databricks, Google Cloud Platform or Microsoft Fabric would be desirable.

Governance, security and operational reliability

You will establish and uphold standards covering Power BI workspaces, row-level security, deployment pipelines, source control, release management, monitoring and production support.

You will ensure reporting products are secure, accessible, documented and suitable for controlled enterprise release.

Your responsibilities will also include data lineage, data contracts, reconciliation and operational reliability.

You will take ownership of technical debt and help ensure that reporting logic is placed in the appropriate layer.

A strong focus on reusable, governed and maintainable products is essential.

Technical leadership and coaching

You will act as a senior technical adviser across multidisciplinary teams, leading design reviews and making complex technical trade-offs clear.

You will balance delivery speed with long-term product quality, challenge existing designs constructively and set appropriate technical standards.

You will coach and review other developers or analysts, raising capability through guidance, reusable examples and constructive feedback.

The role requires sound judgement, personal accountability and the confidence to make decisions in ambiguous or technically complex situations.

You will communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, explaining calculations, risks, dependencies and trade-offs clearly.

Experience of reviewing others’ work and improving standards across a BI or analytics environment is expected.

User experience and continuous improvement

You will lead the design of intuitive, question-led reporting journeys, using user feedback and evidence to improve adoption.

You will consider visual design, accessibility and usability alongside technical quality, ensuring that reporting experiences genuinely support informed decisions.

Experience in UX or UI methods, user research, analytics product management, adoption measurement or legacy-reporting decommissioning would be beneficial.

Working knowledge of Python or R, together with familiarity with AI-assisted or conversational analytics, would also be welcomed.
