Do you enjoy making complex physical behavior easier for other engineers to model and trust?

Join the Simscape Electrical team at MathWorks. We build the physical modeling libraries, analysis utilities, and examples that engineers worldwide rely on to study electrical networks, from microgrids and renewable plants to utility-scale grids. Our components are used for everything from load flow and harmonic studies through to detailed electromagnetic transient analysis. Take a look at Simscape Electrical.

At MathWorks, modeling engineers are members of multidisciplinary product teams that include documentation content developers, quality engineers, technical marketing specialists, and usability professionals, all with a common goal: to develop high-quality engineering design tools that meet the needs of customers ranging from students to experienced professional engineers.

This team is based in Cambridge, UK, and works closely with colleagues in the United States and India.

MathWorks nurtures growth, appreciates inclusivity, encourages initiative, values teamwork, shares success, and rewards excellence.

Responsibilities

You will contribute to product planning, design, development, and testing for the power system components in Simscape Electrical. You will work with a multi-national, cross-functional team, taking responsibility for technical work.

  • Develop and verify mathematical models of electrical machines, transformers, transmission lines, and cables, including frequency-dependent and magnetic domain effects.
  • Support components across phasor-mode and electromagnetic transient simulation, including initialization to steady state.
  • Create analysis utilities and apps for studies such as load flow, harmonics, and fault analysis.
  • Build reference examples on benchmark networks and on applications such as microgrids and renewable plants.
  • Model inverter-based resources and their interaction with network dynamics and protection.
  • Validate models against reference data or benchmark studies.
  • Present modeling approaches and design proposals to colleagues in design reviews.
Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree and 6 years of professional work experience (or a master's degree and 3 years of professional work experience, or a PhD degree, or equivalent experience) is required.
Additional Qualifications
Required

We are looking for most of the following, gained through industry, research, or applied project work:

  • Modeling power system components such as generators, transformers, or transmission and distribution networks.
  • Power system studies such as load flow, fault analysis, harmonics, or dynamic and transient analysis.
  • Phasor-based or electromagnetic transient simulation, and the engineering questions each approach supports.
  • Translating physical power system behavior into simulation-ready, parameterized models.
Plusses

None of the following is required; experience of any would strengthen an application:

  • Protection concepts such as overcurrent or distance relay coordination.
  • Grid-forming and grid-following converter, machine, or microgrid controls.
  • Renewable integration, inverter-based resources, or converter-dominated grids.
  • Utility, ISO/RTO, or consultancy workflows such as planning, operations, interconnection, or protection studies.
  • MATLAB and Simulink for modeling, analysis, or automation.
  • Simscape Electrical models and workflows.
  • Building documented, reusable components used by a broad engineering community.
