Job summary

Markel UK is evolving its Direct & Digital trading platform and seeks a Senior Underwriter (PI & D&O) to influence trading strategy, portfolio performance and product development. You will work with leadership across Underwriting, Trading, Product and Digital teams to drive data-led decisions and modernise underwriting processes.

You will bring strong PI and D&O expertise, operate with authority, and help shape governance, with a focus on profitable growth and technology-enabled underwriting.

Qualifications

• Significant commercial underwriting experience.
• Strong PI expertise.
• Experience underwriting D&O risks.
• Experience operating with underwriting authority.
• Exposure to referral underwriting and technical decision-making.
• Strong understanding of underwriting governance and controls.
• Portfolio management and performance monitoring experience.
• Excellent customer management and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Apply senior underwriting authority across PI and SME risks.
• Make referrals and underwriting decisions outside standard automated rules.
• Support profitable growth through risk selection.
• Drive improvements in quote, conversion and retention.
• Monitor portfolio performance and trading results.
• Analyze conversion, acceptance rates, loss ratios and profitability.
• Shape future Direct insurance products and underwriting rules.
• Support automation and digital journeys and AI initiatives.
• Provide expertise on new product launches and governance.
