Job summary

An opportunity has arisen to join the respiratory physiotherapy team on a substantive contract, our friendly department is full of opportunity for a dynamic, enthusiastic physiotherapist who wishes to develop a range of clinical expertise within the field of cardio-respiratory physiotherapy. We offer a variety of adult rotations across the three specialist sites. Rotations include: critical care- including general ITU, trauma, neuro-surgery and cardiac, respiratory medicine including acute respiratory units and general surgery. We also now offer a paediatric rotation at the St. Mary's site with the opportunity to work on both the acute wards and PICU, as well 2 rotations into the community respiratory physiotherapy team.

We are looking for an enthusiastic physiotherapist, with a keen interest in the field of cardio-respiratory physiotherapy, a wide range of clinical experience, good communication skills, interpersonal skills and a passion for delivering excellent patient centred care. You will have the opportunity to develop your specialist skills and knowledge in the areas of respiratory physiotherapy including NIV, ventilator and tracheostomy weaning and rehabilitation both within the critical care and ward environments.

You will have excellent support from band 7 and 8a specialist physiotherapists in each rotation and work closely with the well-established multi-disciplinary team.

Main duties of the job
  • To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including management of patients in your care.
  • To assess patient understanding of treatment proposals, to ensure improved compliance, gain valid informed consent and work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.
  • To communicate effectively, using a range of verbal and non-verbal skills, with patients and carers/family to motivate, engage to participate in therapy and to ensure an understanding of their condition.
  • To deal sensitively and constructively with patients and carers/family, who have high levels of anxiety frustration or aggression caused by a variety of issues, such as pain, poor prognosis or limited mobility.
  • To advise and support patients and carers; particularly where motivation and persuasion are required.
  • To plan and prioritise own caseload independently on a day-to-day basis to ensure patients are appropriately seen, in conjunction with the priorities of the team and to give assistance to other team members as required.
  • To be flexible in the organisation of own caseload and to respond to predictable and unpredictable service needs throughout the day.
  • To take delegated responsibility for the operational management of the team, allocating and guiding the work of junior and assistant staff to meet service priorities on a daily basis.
