Job Description:

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

The shift pattern for this position is Mon to Fri 0830-1630.

A Senior Pharmacy Support Worker (Primary Care) has a vital role in helping NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde deliver its Primary Care Pharmacotherapy Services ensuring safe, effective use of medicines. You will assist pharmacists and pharmacy technicians by undertaking routine tasks. Some of these tasks may require a moderate degree of technical expertise. You will also be required to discuss use of medicines over the telephone with patients.

Following standard operating procedures you will coordinate the collection of information, input and analyse data, update clinical records as appropriate and collate information in support of quality medication reviews.

Some of the key elements are:

  • To support the Primary Care Pharmacy Team in pharmacotherapy activities and the promotion of cost-effective prescribing and implementation of cost-effective prescribing initiatives.
  • The role will include prescription management within GP practices and provide organisational support to the Cluster and/or HSCP Primary Care Pharmacy Team members.
  • To undertake level 1 (non-clinical) medication reviews following an agreed protocol, highlighting issues (such as non-concordance) to pharmacy technicians and pharmacists, and suggesting resolutions to agreed issues (such as dose alignment).
  • Work to standard operating procedures to facilitate medicines reconciliation and making changes to patient records.
  • To receive referrals for medication reviews or serial prescriptions.
  • In partnership with pharmacy team and GP practice colleagues, to consider, agree and implement improvements to practice prescription (acute and repeat) processes.
  • Act as first point of contact for queries from community pharmacies, triaging to appropriate colleagues or resolving where possible to agreed protocols.
  • Organising pharmacist’s clinics and care at home appointments with patients.
  • Act as a point of contact for stock supply issues relevant to the practice.
  • Be point of contact for the pharmacy team, on areas such as supply problems, issues with prescriptions. The role will be to triage the information to the most appropriate member of staff.

Essential Qualifications: Excellent written and verbal skills; previous or current experience working with medicines and/or in a healthcare environment; basic knowledge of the role of the HSCP in provision of healthcare; excellent interpersonal skills; computer literate with good general IT skills e.g. Word and Excel, and ability to learn new systems; problem solving ability; demonstrates and maintains a high level of accuracy and attention to detail; able to maintain utmost confidentiality with regards to patient and GP practice information; prepare and present information in a user friendly manner; recognise limits of own role and understand when and who to refer to when necessary; able to manage own workload, which may include working alone, under direct supervision of senior team members, as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Desirable qualifications: SVQ2 Pharmacy Services (or working towards); experience working in a pharmacy environment; experience acting as a mentor/trainer to newer less experienced team members; basic knowledge of the role of pharmacy services in primary care; awareness of law and good practice relating to prescribing, storage, and handling of medicines. A valid driving licence is also desirable as you may have to move across the HSCP.
