Job Description
A leading provider of innovative laser systems serving various global markets, including renewables, microelectronics, research, life science, automotive, and medicine.
We are seeking an experienced NPI Engineer to collaborate with the mechanical and optical development teams, ensuring design for manufacturing remains a focus during the development of our laser systems.
The role involves providing DFX feedback through prototype and pilot production, assisting in resolving issues, and supplying documentation, tooling, and training to enable manufacturing in a clean environment.
You will ensure product compliance with specifications and test products via HALT/HASS to identify weaknesses and implement improvements. Focused on manufacturability, you will contribute to developing new processes, adopting automation, and integrating new technologies to ensure repeatability and reliability in laser production.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- A hands-on approach is essential, engaging directly with manufacturing to resolve issues on the line.
- Conduct lab-based testing to define processes and optimize designs, including environmental testing, component improvements, and material testing (e.g., adhesives, desiccants).
- Build prototype and pilot laser systems.
- Define, test, and implement production tooling.
- Manage the transfer of new laser products from design to manufacturing, ensuring build documentation, BOM, tooling, and training are in place.
- Monitor prototype and pilot production, ensure yields and cycle times meet expectations, and identify areas for improvement.
- Influence design and engineering to incorporate Lean and Six Sigma principles.
- Ensure design for manufacturing is integrated into designs.
- Lead FMEA processes for modules to ensure first-time right designs.
- Coordinate with Operations, suppliers, and subcontractors to facilitate smooth product transitions.
- Gather customer validation data by liaising with field service.
- Maintain lab standards and environment.
- Define GUIs and automation routines to streamline manufacturing.
- Create comprehensive build documentation for laser and dub systems.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Experience in a manufacturing setting, especially in transferring designs to production in high-tech environments.
- Degree in science, technology, engineering, or equivalent industrial experience.
- Passion for problem-solving and continuous improvement, with a proactive attitude.
- Responsibility and initiative in driving improvements.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Quick learner, hands-on, with foundational knowledge of lasers and their operation.
Additional Skills
- Knowledge of NPI processes and project planning.
- Experience with PLM software (e.g., Agile).
- Cleanroom experience.
- Knowledge of lasers, optics, electronics, and opto-mechanics.
- Experience with optical fiber handling.
- Proficiency in LabVIEW, Python, C#, or similar.
- Experience with CAD software like SolidWorks.
- Understanding of Lean and Six Sigma methodologies.
- Background in material science for material selection and epoxy applications.
