Job summary

National Physical Laboratory (NPL) seeks a talented and experienced Senior Network Engineer to join our Technical Operations team in the UK. The primary focus is on on-premises network engineering with a secondary remit to provide infrastructure support.

Qualifications

• Experience designing, implementing and supporting on-premises network infrastructure in enterprise environments.
• Knowledge of Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise switching and OmniVista management is highly advantageous.
• Hands-on experience with Fortinet firewalls, IPSec VPNs and network security concepts.
• Familiarity with SD-WAN, MPLS and IPv6 transition strategies is preferred.
• Strong problem-solving, communication and documentation skills.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and manage on-premises network infrastructure based on Alcatel-Lucent switches and Wireless APs.
• Configure and maintain Fortinet firewalls to ensure security.
• Monitor and troubleshoot network performance to ensure optimal operation.
• Implement network improvements and manage changes with minimal downtime.
• Support Endpoint IPAM/DHCP/DNS services within the Infrastructure team.
• Lead project work and maintenance on on-prem infrastructure including virtualization, storage and backup (VMware, Hitachi, Rubrik, Nimble).
• Ensure patching and security of network systems; collaborate with cybersecurity on NAC and segmentation technologies.
• Report on network utilisation and performance for wired/wireless infrastructure; ensure solutions meet business needs.
• Create and update operational documentation and diagrams for all network and telephone systems.
