At Babcock, we’re working to create a safe and secure world. If you join us, you can play your part as a Senior Naval Architect at our Devonport site.

As a Senior Naval Architect, you’ll have an extraordinary role. Babcock is rapidly establishing itself as an international naval ship designer and builder. We have built on the success of the UK MoD Type-31 Frigate and secured contracts for export variants with overseas customers. Our engineering team is actively working on shipbuilding and life extension programs worldwide, from fast attack craft to aircraft carriers.

We are expanding our engineering and ship design teams to capitalize on these opportunities. If you are interested in advancing your career, consider Babcock for your next move.

The role

Develop designs through concept and early-stage design, support the bidding process, and deliver complex structural solutions within an engaging team environment. Responsibilities include authoring, reviewing, and substantiating marine designs through calculations, simulations, and diagnostic tests. You will lead product development throughout the design lifecycle, provide technical support to key customers, and act as Technical Authority with deep subject knowledge of marine engineering.

  • Prepare and produce substantiation reports for marine solutions across all design phases, ensuring compliance with standards, time, cost, and quality requirements.
  • Coordinate with design teams and stakeholders throughout the design lifecycle, supporting design reviews.
  • Develop innovative, well-substantiated design solutions.
  • Resolve manufacturing and installation issues by addressing technical and production queries.

This is a full-time role (37 hours/week) with hybrid working: 2 days in-office and 3 days remote.

Essential experience
  • Proven structural design experience in a highly regulated industry.
  • Experience with analytical software such as Paramarine, NAPA, FORAN, Maxsurf, FEA, CFD, or CAD.
  • Experience contributing to design reviews.
Qualifications
  • HND/HNC in an engineering discipline (degree preferred).
  • Membership in relevant institutions (e.g., RINA, IET, IMechE, IMarEst) with Chartered or Incorporated status, or a clear route to obtain it.
Security

The successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain Security Check (SC) clearance. Many roles are subject to national security and trade restrictions, which may be affected by nationality, citizenship, or residency.

What we offer
  • Matched contribution pension scheme with life assurance.
  • Employee share scheme.
  • Shopping savings portal.
  • Payment of professional fees.
  • 10 days of paid leave for Reservists in the armed forces.
  • Holiday Trading to buy or sell annual leave.
  • ‘Be Kind Day’ for volunteering leave.
  • Autonomy in your role.
  • Opportunity to work on some of the most exciting engineering projects in the country.
