Job summary

Multitask Personnel in Cardiff is seeking a Lead Technical Engineer to shape design and strategy across gas, electricity, water and telecoms. You will lead a small team, act as a senior technical authority, and help engineers progress toward Incorporated or Chartered status.

This hybrid role requires an engineering qualification (HNC Level 5) and extensive multi-utility experience. You will influence feasibility, governance, and procurement inputs while maintaining safety and quality standards.

Qualifications

• HNC Level 5 or equivalent in engineering, utilities or construction.
• Extensive multi-utility design, feasibility and strategic engineering experience.
• Demonstrated mentoring of engineers and support for professional development.
• Credibility as a technical authority across multiple utility disciplines.
• Strong coaching, communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Commercial awareness and a practical, risk-based approach to decisions.
• Ability to translate complex technical issues into client-ready recommendations.
• Desirable: Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status; related professional qualifications.
• Desirable: CDM, IOSH or NEBOSH qualifications.

Responsibilities

• Lead multi-utility technical strategy across gas, electricity, water and telecoms.
• Set and maintain design and feasibility standards, templates and governance.
• Mentor and technically develop Project Engineers toward professional status.
• Act as senior technical authority and escalation point for complex sites.
• Oversee feasibility studies covering routes, capacity, costs, risks and programme impacts.
• Provide input to procurement strategy, scope definition and quotations.
• Engage with utility providers and delivery partners on technical matters.
• Provide leadership during construction, issue resolution and close-out.
• Support professional development planning and evidence-building for registration.
• Build team capability through knowledge sharing and technical excellence.
