Penguin Recruitment is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead building services projects in Cardiff or Bristol. You will mentor juniors, manage client relationships, and deliver low-carbon engineering solutions across sectors.

The role requires 5+ years in mechanical building services, expertise in HVAC, BMS, and sustainable technologies, with progression toward Chartered status and membership in CIBSE.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of experience in mechanical building services design.
• Experience leading projects and engineering teams.
• Membership of CIBSE (or working towards it).
• Progress towards Chartered Engineer status desirable.
• Strong technical expertise in HVAC, load calculations, low-carbon design, heat pumps and renewables.
• Domestic water services and public health design.
• BMS integration and controls coordination.

• Proficiency in CAD, MagicCAD and BIM software.

Responsibilities

• Lead the mechanical design process across RIBA stages, ensuring high-quality, innovative solutions.
• Manage projects and coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver on time and within budget.

• Oversee quality assurance procedures and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.

Senior Mechanical Engineer - Building Services

Location: Cardiff / Bristol
Type: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: 45,000 - 60,000 (dependent on experience)

Overview

An established building services consultancy is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to join its growing team in either Cardiff or Bristol. This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong engineer with at least five years' experience in mechanical building services design who is looking to lead projects, mentor junior engineers, and work closely with clients to deliver innovative, low-carbon engineering solutions across a diverse range of sectors.

The successful candidate will have proven project leadership experience, a strong understanding of UK building services legislation, regulations and industry standards, and technical expertise in HVAC, heating and cooling load calculations, public health design, plantroom design, BMS integration, and sustainable technologies including heat pumps and renewables. Membership with CIBSE (or working towards it), together with progress towards Chartered Engineer status and proficiency in CAD, MagicCAD and BIM software, would be highly advantageous.

Day-to-Day

• Collaborate with architects, contractors, and other engineering disciplines to deliver coordinated designs.
• Develop detailed mechanical designs, specifications, and reports.
• Attend project meetings and provide technical input to ensure project objectives are met.
• Conduct site visits to monitor progress, resolve issues, and ensure compliance with design specifications.
• Support the development of innovative, sustainable, and energy-efficient solutions for clients.
• Mentor and support junior team members, sharing knowledge and expertise.
