Job summary

Hoare Lea is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to lead the design and delivery of complex building services across multiple projects in the built environment. You will manage internal teams, coordinate with consultants, and represent the company at client meetings.

We expect Chartered status, strong technical knowledge, and excellent client-facing skills. The role offers hybrid working from Bournemouth or Reading with extensive development opportunities.

Qualifications

• Qualified and recognised in the industry, preferably with Chartered status.
• Proven, in-depth technical knowledge in mechanical/building services design and regulations.
• Strong understanding of complementary disciplines and leading integrated design teams.
• Excellent client-facing skills with ability to manage difficult situations.
• Demonstrable experience leading design teams on complex projects and delivering to demanding timescales.
• Commercial awareness: experience monitoring project costs and risks for profitable delivery.
• Strong organisational and planning skills to prioritise multiple demands.
• Confident communicator – excellent written and spoken English and external representation experience.
• IT literate with proficiency in industry software (Revit, AutoCAD).
• Committed to continuous professional development and supporting career growth.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design delivery for significant and complex schemes, ensuring design objectives and quality.
• Define and agree design briefs with clients and manage client relationships.
• Represent Hoare Lea at project meetings and promote services for current and future projects.
• Lead, prioritise and motivate the internal project team and chair meetings.
• Review and mentor work, contributing to teams' development.
• Monitor project expenditure, costs and resource requirements and report to leadership.
• Identify and manage project and commercial risks and procurement impacts.
• Ensure deliverables meet quality standards, technical accuracy and deadlines.
• Share technical knowledge across the business and collaborate across disciplines.
• Communicate openly and effectively at all levels with internal and external stakeholders.
