Job summary

Leonardo UK Basildon is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to contribute to the next generation of sensors. You will conduct detailed mechanical design, perform analyses, and support all lifecycle steps from development through production.

The role blends on-site Basildon work with remote options, reflecting project needs. You will work with senior peers to advance development, perform DOE activities, and ensure compliance with quality and safety standards, while contributing to cost and schedule

Qualifications

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent; defence environments experience preferred.
• Design for harsh environments (shock, vibration, temperature, EMC).
• Mechanical design and development using 3D CAD tools (Creo).
• Structured problem solving to investigate issues.
• Understand structural and thermal analyses data to inform design.
• DfX across Manufacturing, Assembly, Test and Sustainability.

Responsibilities

• Producing Manufacturing Data Packs in line with BS8888, including GD&T.
• Support to successful resolution of technical investigations.
• Contributing to reviews of mechanical designs in line with standards.
• Hands on involvement in development builds and Design of Experiments.
• Supporting the introduction of new products into the Development/Production lifecycle.
• Contributing to Work Package delivery to meet Quality, Schedule and Cost.

All members of the Mechanical Engineering Team are encouraged to continually develop their technical skills within structural, thermal and model driven engineering aspects of Mechanical Engineering.

This role allows a mixture of on‑site and remote working; with attendance at our Basildon facility required when Customer requirements dictate.

What You’ll Bring

You will deliver compliance of Mechanical Engineering solutions through the entire Engineering Lifecycle, ensuring that the solutions consider all requirements including product quality, safety, reliability, etc. Mechanical Engineering detailed design; including numerical calculations, tolerance studies, etc.

You will support, and get support from, senior Peers in the delivery of mechanical solutions and techniques that enable the team to advance the next generation of product.

• Producing Manufacturing Data Packs in line with BS8888, including appropriate use of GD&T.
• Support to successful resolution of technical investigations.
• Contributing to reviews of mechanical designs in accordance with business and industry standards.
• Hands on involvement in practical implementation of development builds and Design of Experiments.
• Providing support during the introduction of new product into the Development/Production lifecycle phase.
• Actively contribute to Work Package delivery elements to achieve desired Quality, Schedule and Cost.

Essential Skills, Qualifications And Experience

• A degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar), or experience in the field of Defence (Airborne, naval, etc) environments. Mechanical engineering for Electronic and/or EO products
• Design of systems for ‘harsh environments’ i.e. Shock, Vibration, Temperature, EMC, Salt fog, etc.
• Mechanical design and development using 3D CAD tools (ideally PTC Creo).
• Problem solving using a structured, logical approach to investigate issues and problems in an effective manner.
• Understanding Structural and Thermal Analyses data, to inform design decisions.
• Experienced in various aspects of Design for X (DfX), including Manufacturing, Assembly, Test, Integration and Sustainability.
