Leonardo UK Ltd in Basildon is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our team developing next-generation sensors. You will work with talented engineers and scientists to tackle challenging mechanical engineering problems across the lifecycle, with a mix of on-site and remote work and occasional attendance at Basildon when required.

Qualifications

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar) or defence env experience.
• Experience designing systems for harsh environments (shock, vibration, temp, EMC).
• Proficient with 3D CAD tools, preferably Creo.
• Structured problem-solving approach to investigate issues.
• Understanding structural and thermal analyses data to inform design decisions.
• DfX knowledge: manufacturing, assembly, test, integration and sustainability.

Responsibilities

• Producing Manufacturing Data Packs per BS8888 with GD&T.
• Supporting technical investigations.
• Reviewing mechanical designs to standards.
• Hands-on development builds and Design of Experiments.
• Assisting introduction of new products into lifecycle phases.

The role will require novel approaches to overcome the demanding challenges set by our customers and will build on decades of domain leading heritage.

All members of the Mechanical Engineering Team are encouraged to continually develop their technical skills within structural, thermal and model driven engineering aspects of Mechanical Engineering.

This role allows a mixture of on-site and remote working; with attendance at our Basildon facility required when Customer requirements dictate.

What you’ll bring

You will deliver compliance of Mechanical Engineering solutions through the entire Engineering Lifecycle, ensuring that the solutions consider all requirements including product quality, safety, reliability, etc. Mechanical Engineering detailed design; including numerical calculations, tolerance studies, etc.

You will support, and get support from, senior Peers in the delivery of mechanical solutions and techniques that enable the team to advance the next generation of product.

• Producing Manufacturing Data Packs in line with BS8888, including appropriate use of GD&T.
• Support to successful resolution of technical investigations.
• Contributing to reviews of mechanical designs in accordance with business and industry standards.
• Hands on involvement in practical implementation of development builds and Design of Experiments.
• Providing support during the introduction of new product into the Development/Production lifecycle phase.
• Actively contribute to Work Package delivery elements to achieve desired Quality, Schedule and Cost.

Essential Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

• A degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar), or experience in the field of Defence (Airborne, naval, etc) environments. Mechanical engineering for Electronic and/or EO products
• Design of systems for ‘harsh environments’ i.e. Shock, Vibration, Temperature, EMC, Salt fog, etc.
• Mechanical design and development using 3D CAD tools (ideally PTC Creo).
• Problem solving using a structured, logical approach to investigate issues and problems in an effective manner.
• Understanding Structural and Thermal Analyses data, to inform design decisions.
• Experienced in various aspects of Design for X (DfX), including Manufacturing, Assembly, Test, Integration and Sustainability.
