Job summary

Recruit 12 is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the design of highly engineered machinery in Cambridgeshire. You will take products from concept through to manufacture, testing and continuous improvement, delivering robust, cost-effective solutions.

You will develop detailed 3D CAD models, perform calculations, and apply FEA as needed, mentoring junior engineers and ensuring compliance with standards and safety requirements.

Qualifications

• Strong experience in a mechanical design engineering role.
• Excellent experience using industry-standard 3D CAD systems.
• Experience designing for manufacture, including machining, fabrication and welding.
• Strong understanding of materials, tolerancing, fits and engineering principles.
• Experience with engineering calculations and ideally FEA.
• The ability to take ownership of projects from concept through to production.
• Strong problem-solving and technical decision-making skills.
• Experience working collaboratively with manufacturing, quality, procurement and suppliers.
• The confidence to provide technical leadership and support junior engineers.
• An engineering degree or comparable qualification/accreditation.

Responsibilities

• Develop detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies and manufacturing drawings.
• Take designs from concept through to manufacture.
• Carry out engineering calculations, tolerancing and design validation.
• Use FEA and simulation where appropriate.
• Select materials and appropriate manufacturing processes.
• Work closely with manufacturing, quality, procurement and suppliers.
• Investigate technical issues and develop effective solutions.
• Improve product performance, reliability, weight and cost.
• Support prototypes, testing and product development.
• Provide technical direction and mentoring to less-experienced engineers.
• Ensure designs meet relevant engineering standards, legislation and safety requirements.
