Job summary

Wagstaff Recruitment in the West Midlands is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the development of bespoke machinery and grow into a Chief Engineer role. You will work with manufacturing, sales, quality and senior management to deliver high-impact projects and mentor junior engineers.

You will own major design activities, deliver CAD models and calculations, and perform validation and stress analyses to ensure safety and performance. Salary £45,000–£50,000 DOE.

Qualifications

• Experience in Mechanical Design Engineering within special purpose machinery, heavy engineering or other complex engineered products.
• Track record of managing projects from concept through to production.
• Strong mechanical design knowledge, including engineering calculations and analysis.
• Experience using 2D and 3D CAD software.
• Excellent communication skills and confidence interacting with customers and stakeholders.
• Proactive mindset with a desire to take ownership, influence decisions and develop others.
• Ambitions to progress into a Senior Leadership or Chief Engineer position.

Responsibilities

• Leading the design and development of bespoke special purpose machinery from concept through to manufacture and installation.
• Taking ownership of multiple projects, managing technical decisions and ensuring successful delivery.
• Producing detailed 2D and 3D CAD designs, calculations and validation activities.
• Performing stress calculations, design reviews and product testing to ensure quality, safety and performance standards are met.
• Working directly with customers to understand challenges and develop innovative engineering solutions.
• Collaborating across manufacturing, sales, quality and senior management teams to deliver business-critical projects.
• Mentoring junior engineers and helping drive a culture of continuous improvement and engineering excellence.
• Supporting the long-term development of the engineering department as part of a clear succession plan towards Chief Engineer level.

The Role
