Job summary

Hunter Selection are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer in Walsall to join a well-established manufacturer of bespoke machinery. You will lead the design and delivery of complex capital equipment, driving technical decisions and customer collaboration.

This role offers a clear progression path towards Chief Engineer, exposure to strategic engineering decisions, and a salary of £45,000–£50,000 DOE with flexible working and a company vehicle.

Qualifications

• Experience in mechanical design engineering within special purpose machinery or heavy engineering.
• Track record of managing projects from concept through to production.
• Strong mechanical design knowledge including calculations and analysis.
• Experience using 2D and 3D CAD software.
• Excellent communication skills with customers and stakeholders.
• Proactive mindset to take ownership, influence decisions and develop others.
• Ambitions to progress into a Senior Leadership or Chief Engineer position.

Responsibilities

• Leading the design and development of bespoke special purpose machinery from concept through to manufacture and installation.
• Taking ownership of multiple projects, managing technical decisions and ensuring successful delivery.
• Producing detailed 2D and 3D CAD designs, calculations and validation activities.
• Performing stress calculations, design reviews and product testing to ensure quality, safety and performance standards are met.
• Working directly with customers to understand challenges and develop innovative engineering solutions.
• Collaborating across manufacturing, sales, quality and senior management teams to deliver business-critical projects.
• Mentoring junior engineers and helping drive a culture of continuous improvement and engineering excellence.
• Supporting the long-term development of the engineering department as part of a clear succession plan towards Chief Engineer level.

The Role

About You

We're looking for an ambitious engineer who combines strong technical ability with the desire to grow into a leadership role.

You'll ideally have:

• Experience in Mechanical Design Engineering within special purpose machinery, heavy engineering or other complex engineered products.
• A track record of managing projects from concept through to production.
• Strong mechanical design knowledge, including engineering calculations and analysis.
• Experience using 2D and 3D CAD software.
• Excellent communication skills and confidence interacting with customers and stakeholders.
• A proactive mindset with a desire to take ownership, influence decisions and develop others.
