Job summary

Colchester Technology Company in Colchester is seeking a Senior Thermal Mechanical Engineer to own thermal performance across complex electromechanical products, from requirements through prototype to production support.

The role is hands-on, end-to-end, with a strong emphasis on managing projects and collaborating with cross-functional teams in a hybrid Colchester environment.

Qualifications

• Strong understanding of thermal principles in electronics.
• Hands-on, end-to-end engineering experience is expected.
• SolidWorks proficiency with ability to work independently and creatively.

Responsibilities

• Review requirements and contribute to early system architecture discussions.
• Create initial conceptual mechanical designs.
• Run detailed structural and thermal analysis (SolidWorks Flow Simulation preferred).
• Present work at preliminary and critical design reviews.
• Manage projects independently while collaborating with PMs, hardware, software and manufacturing teams.
• Investigate production issues, quality problems and root causes under time pressure.
• Build, test and debug prototypes in the lab.
• Design jigs, fixtures and producing assembly drawings with correct GD&T.
• Support new product introduction and explore new thermal technologies (heat pipes, vapour chambers, advanced TIMs).

Job Title: Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - Thermal

Location: Colchester

Salary: £60,000 to £70,000

We're supporting a long‑established technology company in Colchester as they continue to expand their engineering capability. They design and manufacture high‑performance electronic systems for defence, aerospace and industrial environments, and due to a strong order book, they're looking to add a Senior Thermal Mechanical Engineer to the team. This is a hands‑on, end‑to‑end role where you'll own thermal performance across complex electromechanical products - from requirements review through to prototype build, test and production support.

What you'll be doing

• Reviewing requirements and contributing to early system architecture discussions.
• Creating initial conceptual mechanical designs.
• Running detailed structural and thermal analysis (SolidWorks Flow Simulation preferred).
• Presenting work at preliminary and critical design reviews.
• Managing projects independently while collaborating with PMs, hardware, software and manufacturing teams.

• Building, testing and debugging prototypes in the lab.

What you'll bring

• Strong understanding of thermal principles in electronics.
• Practical, hands‑on industry experience - typically around 5-10 years.
• Proven experience with SolidWorks - Ability to work dynamically, independently and think creatively.
• Comfortable engaging with suppliers, project managers and cross‑functional teams.
• Strong problem‑solving mindset — someone who doesn't sit on problems and enjoys time in the lab.

This role requires the successful candidate to pass BPSS screening and meet the eligibility criteria for Security Check (SC) clearance.
