Job summary

Engineered Arts is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to help build the future of human-robot interaction in a fast-paced, hybrid role based in London with quarterly visits to the Falmouth HQ. You will design mechanical components, perform lifecycle development from concept to production, and collaborate with electronics and software teams to integrate complex subsystems.

You will work across actuators, skins, kinematics, prototyping and production readiness, applying GD&T, tolerance

Qualifications

• Strong real-world experience in mechanical design.
• Advanced proficiency in 3D parametric CAD (preferably Autodesk Inventor).
• Solid understanding of GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis.
• Strong background in mechanism design, linkages, bearings, power transmission, and actuator integration.
• Hands-on prototyping experience.
• Experience with a range of materials from engineering essentials to aesthetics.
• Experience designing for manufacturability (DFM) and assembly (DFA).
• Ability to work cross-functionally with electrical and controls teams to integrate motors, sensors, wiring, and embedded systems.
• Proven ability to take hardware from concept through validation and into production.
• Direct experience developing legged or humanoid robotic systems.
• Experience in design combining the aesthetic and the functional (e.g. animatronics, special effects).
• Experience designing bespoke actuators, transmission mechanisms, and complex mechanisms and joints.
• Knowledge of thermal management for compact electromechanical assemblies.
• Familiarity with motion control systems and basic control theory.
• Understanding of safety standards for robotic systems.
• Startup experience or experience in fast-paced hardware development environments.
• Experience transitioning from prototype to volume manufacturing.
• Experience with organic mesh modelling (Blender, Z-Brush)

Responsibilities

• Design mechanical components and subsystems for humanoid robots, including novel mechanisms and skins.
• Take designs through lifecycle from concept to production and maintenance.
• Balance constraints across aesthetics, performance, durability, availability and manufacturability.
• Design for materials and processes balancing strength, weight, cost and scalability.
• Collaborate with manufacturing teams across additive, CNC, casting and moulding techniques.
• Provide practical, end-to-end problem solving and design tooling improvements.
• Collaborate with Electronics and Software teams to integrate mechanical systems with sensing and embedded hardware.
• Validate real-world performance through testing and analysis as needed.
• Generate and maintain detailed engineering documentation including drawings and BOMs.
• Contribute to product compliance, including risk assessments and safety standards.
