An experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (electro-mechanical/electrical/mechanical engineer) is urgently required to join a growing R&D team for a novel technology STEM organisation.

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will use your mechanical design engineering and electrical expertise to lead and develop new system designs (equipment/machinery) concepts and technology solutions from idea through to commercially viable solutions for the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical & electrical engineering activities supporting the detailed design and development of machinery/systems equipment.
  • Support communication with internal teams (notably the US team) and contracted engineers to create functional project solutions.
  • Collaborate with suppliers on the design, manufacture, and delivery of production line components.
  • Lead prototyping and design verification testing to support design, optimization, cost reduction, and quality improvement.
  • Design and implement approaches to design verification, prototyping, materials selection, and testing.
  • Integrate new technologies into production lines and new product development, as well as fault-finding and improvements on existing products and systems.
  • Assist with the design, development, and operation of the company's UK pilot line.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams to optimize production line manufacturability, cost, and quality.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Strong understanding of commercial mechanical systems and future technology trends.
  • Pyrolysis experience in both large and small scale operations is essential.
  • Proficient in CAD software, ideally SolidWorks & Navisworks (certification preferred). Experience with other CAD software is a plus.
  • Desirable: Experience in drafting and delivering mechanical and electrical drawings (e.g., P&IDs, Process Flow Diagrams, Electrical One Line Diagrams).
  • Hands-on experience developing prototypes through to validation of commercial systems.
  • Experience managing external partners, technical briefs, problem-solving, and reporting.
  • Project and budget management skills are beneficial.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 Quality Management System and related processes.
  • Experience designing machinery for explosive environments (ATEX) and knowledge of HAZOPs.
  • Familiarity with industrial standards (ISO, IEC, ASME/ASTM) and regulations.
  • Knowledge of machinery control systems, PLC/HMI, 3-phase motors, and VFDs.
  • Understanding of EPC document approval processes.

Full-time, permanent, onsite role with up to £50k base salary + benefits, 25 days annual leave.
