Job description

Caudwell Marine is a pioneering UK marine engineering company, backed by entrepreneur and philanthropist John Caudwell. We are redefining marine propulsion through the development of a diesel outboard system built for uncompromising performance, reliability and control in all conditions, with a global product launch planned for 2026. As a growing and ambitious business, we are focused on delivering cutting-edge technology designed for the toughest marine environments and turning innovation into real-world impact.

At Caudwell Marine, every team member plays an important role in shaping the future of the company. Our approach is built around being confident, committed and consistent in everything we do. Driven by endurance and powered by people, we are building a team that sets high standards and is helping redefine the future of marine propulsion.

Role & Responsibilities

We are looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Design & EDS Engineer to take technical ownership of the mechanical design, packaging and integration of electrical distribution systems, controls hardware and associated components from concept through to production-intent release.

This hands-on role combining strong mechanical design, CAD and drawing capability with specialist experience in EDS routing and electrical hardware integration.

Reporting to the Head of Mechanical, Design, Analysis and Integration and working closely with Systems Engineering, CAE, Manufacturing, Quality, Procurement and suppliers, you will help deliver robust, manufacturable, serviceable and validated engineering solutions while balancing product performance, quality, cost, mass, technical risk and programme timing.

Responsibilities include:
  • Take technical ownership of EDS and controls integration work packages from concept through verification and production release.
  • Develop mechanical concepts, 3D CAD, EDS routing, assemblies and production-intent engineering drawings.
  • Develop packaging solutions for harnesses, cables, connectors, sensors, actuators, control modules and associated hardware.
  • Define appropriate mounting, clipping, retention, strain-relief and protection strategies, considering vibration, abrasion, thermal exposure, ingress, corrosion, assembly and serviceability.
  • Work across Electrical, EDS, Controls, Systems, CAE and Validation to manage physical interfaces, technical risks and design dependencies.
  • Lead or support design and packaging reviews, DFMEA, technical risk assessment and verification activities.
  • Support prototype and production-intent builds, suppliers and structured investigation of EDS and controls integration issues.
  • Ensure CAD, routing definition, drawings, BOMs and engineering data are accurate, configuration controlled and suitable for release.
Required Skills & Experience
What We’re Looking For
  • Demonstrable mechanical design experience within a complex multidisciplinary product‑development environment.
  • Strong 3D CAD and production-intent engineering drawing capability, including mechanical packaging and installation design.
  • Experience of EDS, wiring harness, electrical component or controls hardware integration within a mechanical product.
  • Good understanding of harness routing principles including retention, bend radius, strain relief, abrasion protection and installation requirements.
  • Experience packaging connectors, sensors, actuators, control units or related electrical/electronic hardware.
  • Good mechanical engineering fundamentals with knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes and DFM/DFA.
  • Experience of DFMEA, technical risk assessment and structured root-cause problem solving.
  • Sound engineering judgement and the ability to work effectively across Mechanical, Electrical, EDS, Controls and Systems Engineering.
  • Experience in some of the following would be advantageous:
  • Siemens NX and Teamcenter, or comparable high-end CAD and PLM systems.
  • Production intent EDS or wiring harness routing within 3D assemblies.
  • Harness clips, conduits, sleeving, glands, grommets and cable protection.
  • Connectors, sensors and electronic control module packaging.
  • Design of cast, machined, fabricated, moulded or composite components.
  • Prototype development, commissioning, validation and direct supplier engagement.
  • Marine, automotive, aerospace, off-highway or another demanding product-development environment.
  • Knowledge of ICE, transmission or propulsion systems.
Personal Attributes
  • Strong sense of ownership, accountability and engineering judgement.
  • Structured and pragmatic problem solver who supports decisions with appropriate engineering evidence.
  • Clear communicator who works constructively across disciplines, challenges appropriately and escalates risks early.
  • Collaborative approach with a commitment to engineering quality, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
  • Degree-qualified, or able to demonstrate equivalent relevant engineering experience, in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Marine Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Professional registration or progress towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status would be advantageous but is not essential.
