Job description

Senior Marine Hull Underwriter

Location: London / London Market

Salary: £100,000+ + bonus + benefits

Sector: Marine Insurance / Reinsurance

Employment Type: Permanent

The Opportunity

A leading and well-established Marine (re)insurance business operating within the London Market is looking to appoint an experienced Senior Marine Hull Underwriter to strengthen its underwriting team.

This is a senior-level opportunity for an established Hull underwriter looking for genuine autonomy, influence and the opportunity to take ownership of a significant portfolio.

You will work closely with senior leadership and play an important role in developing the future strategy, profitability and growth of the Marine portfolio.

The client is also open to senior underwriters from adjacent Marine classes, including Marine Liabilities and Builders Risk, where there is a strong and credible business plan for developing a new book.

The Role

Reporting into senior Marine underwriting leadership, you will take responsibility for underwriting and developing a portfolio of Marine Hull and associated risks across the London Market and international markets.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Underwriting Marine Hull risks in line with agreed authority, appetite and business objectives
  • Assessing complex and high-value risks and applying strong technical judgement to pricing, terms and conditions
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with London Market brokers, clients and international trading partners
  • Identifying new business opportunities and contributing to profitable portfolio growth
  • Monitoring portfolio performance, loss ratios and accumulations
  • Working closely with claims, actuarial, reinsurance and other technical teams
  • Contributing to annual business planning, growth targets and underwriting strategy
  • Supporting and mentoring junior members of the underwriting team
  • Representing the business at broker meetings, market events and industry forums
  • Maintaining high standards of governance, regulatory compliance and underwriting discipline
What We're Looking For

The successful candidate is likely to have:

  • Significant Marine Hull underwriting experience within the London Market or Lloyd's
  • Experience at Senior Underwriter, Class Underwriter or Active Underwriter level
  • A strong track record of profitable underwriting and portfolio development
  • Excellent technical understanding of Marine Hull risks and pricing
  • Established relationships with London Market brokers and/or international clients
  • Strong commercial judgement and the ability to balance growth with disciplined underwriting
  • The confidence and credibility to represent a business externally
  • Lloyd's market experience and knowledge of relevant governance standards
  • Professional qualifications such as ACII/CII or equivalent are advantageous
  • An Alternative Route – Build Your Own Book

The business is also interested in hearing from senior underwriters specialising in Marine Liabilities or Builders Risk who have the ambition and capability to develop a new area of business.

For the right individual, this could represent a highly entrepreneurial opportunity to help shape and grow a new portfolio.

Candidates following this route will be expected to demonstrate:

  • A clear and commercially credible business plan
  • A defined target market and growth strategy
  • A strong understanding of pricing and risk selection
  • A clear reinsurance strategy
  • Realistic growth and loss-ratio expectations
  • An established broker and distribution network
  • A proven track record of profitable underwriting and book-building
For successful appointments through this route, equity participation is available
What's On Offer
  • £100,000+ base salary, dependent on experience
  • Discretionary bonus
  • Equity participation for qualifying business-plan appointments
  • Comprehensive benefits package
  • Private medical insurance
  • Pension and life assurance
  • Significant autonomy and influence over underwriting strategy
  • Opportunity to shape and grow a Marine portfolio
