Job summary

TÜV SÜD in the UK is seeking a Wireless Test Technician/Engineer to join a team performing testing on radar, Emergency Radio Beacons, AIS and digital interfaces, following a period of training.

You will work in chambers and radio test laboratories, recording results and producing test reports while complying with customer-defined test plans and regulatory requirements. Hybrid/permanent home-working may be available, with potential travel to customer sites.

Qualifications

• Experience with RF test equipment and instrumentation used in RF testing.
• Engineering education or equivalent experience in electrical/electronic engineering.
• Marine industry test-based engineering experience.
• Ability to work independently and take initiative.
• Willingness to learn new disciplines and skills.

Responsibilities

• Test radar and Emergency Radio Beacons to COSPAS SARSAT / RTCM / IEC / EN standards in chambers or test laboratories.
• Record test results and prepare test reports in line with quality procedures.
• Ensure work complies with regulatory requirements or defined test plans, assist with plan development for customers.
• Liaise with Project Manager and customers to provide technical support and meet timescales.
• Support team development through training, sharing expertise and coaching where possible.
• Conduct commercial and technical project validation, including possible site visits.
• Perform internal validation and vetting of test reports.
• Undertake offsite testing as required and other duties at Senior Engineer level.

Job description

Working as part of a team of Wireless Test Technician and Engineers, (after a period of training) you will contribute to the provision of a Wireless testing service, specifically performing testing on radars, Emergency Radio Beacons, AIS and digital interfaces.

Duties and Responsibilities - What will you be doing?

• Testing of radar and Emergency Radio Beacons to COSPAS SARSAT / RTCM / IEC / EN test standards both within the chambers and radio test laboratories at Octagon House, or; testing of AIS, Radar, ECDIS and other marine products using protocol & digital interface techniques.
• Recording test results using various electronic logbook systems and production of test reports, following company quality procedures.
• Ensure that all work is carried out in accordance with the applicable regulatory requirements or defined Test Plan supplied by the customer, assisting with the development of test plans with the customer as necessary.
• Close liaison with the Project Manager and/or customer, to provide technical support and ensure work is carried out accurately and within the timescales allowed.
• Support the development of the team, compiling and delivering training, sharing expertise with colleagues and supporting and coaching wherever possible.
• Commercial and technical validation of projects (may require site visits)
• Internal validation and vetting of test reports
• Adhoc delivery of offsite testing as required.
• Any other duties commensurate with a Senior Engineer role.

What are we looking for?

Essential Criteria:

• Experience of using RF test equipment such as spectrum/network analyser, oscilloscope, signal generator, RF power meter etc.
• Educated to Level 3 in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or be able to demonstrate equivalent and relevant experience.
• Engineering experience in a test based role within the Marine industry
• Ability to work independently and be proactive
• A desire to learn new skills and willing to understand new disciplines

Desirable Criteria:

• An understanding of the requirements of the COSPAS SARSAT / RTCM / IEC / EN standards.
• A full UK driving licence and the ability to travel to customer sites or offsite locations
• Experience performing RF accredited testing.
• Knowledge of Emergency Beacon functionality and the certification requirements.
• Ability to work on various shift patterns
