MEC is a multi-disciplinary engineering and environmental consultancy, delivering services for private and public sector projects across residential, commercial, industrial, retail, leisure, education and healthcare. Operating nationally from offices in Leicestershire, Birmingham, Brighton, London and Nottingham, we provide expert guidance for a wide range of clients.


We are looking for an experienced Senior Lighting Consultant to join our growing Lighting team, with a preference for the role to be based in our Nottingham office. However, we are also open to applications from candidates looking to be based in Leicester or Birmingham.


In this role, you will deliver street lighting designs, lighting impact assessments and daylight assessments across a diverse range of projects. From initial surveys and analysis through to design, reporting and third-party approvals, you will provide practical, technically robust solutions that meet both client requirements and relevant standards.


You will manage projects to agreed programmes and budgets, build strong client and stakeholder relationships, and support the ongoing development of the Lighting team. As a line manager, you will also mentor and develop junior colleagues, helping to build a high-performing and supportive team.


Requirements

Key Responsibilities include:


As a Senior Lighting Consultant, you will take responsibility for delivering high-quality lighting consultancy work, managing project requirements and working collaboratively with clients, colleagues and external stakeholders.



  • Support the Associate and Directors with the continued growth and development of the Lighting team.

  • Develop street lighting designs, lighting impact assessments and daylight assessments.

  • Undertake lighting analysis, modelling and surveys, including the development of appropriate mitigation strategies.

  • Produce high-quality reports, design models, drawings, calculations and client correspondence within agreed timescales and budgets.

  • Use software including Dialux Evo, Lighting Reality, SketchUp, AutoCAD and other relevant programmes.

  • Carry out daytime and night-time site visits, surveys and investigation work as required.

  • Attend meetings with clients, development teams, other disciplines and relevant third parties.

  • Liaise with planning authorities, highway authorities, environmental health officers, ecologists and other statutory bodies to support efficient project delivery.

  • Submit reports and designs for third-party approval, maintaining proactive communication with clients and approving bodies throughout.

  • Ensure all technical work is completed in line with MEC's quality assurance and two-stage checking procedures.

  • Maintain and develop departmental standards, systems and procedures, embracing industry best practice and technical innovation.

  • Support research and development initiatives, including leading the annual R&D claim process.

  • Comply with Designer responsibilities under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015.

  • Support business development activity, client care, fee proposals and repeat-business opportunities.

  • Work collaboratively with MEC’s multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated solutions for clients.


Project Management Responsibilities



  • Manage lighting projects across a range of sectors and, where required, support multi-disciplinary project delivery.

  • Manage project administration, client liaison, quality, programmes, budgets, resources and invoicing.

  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, obtaining feedback and identifying opportunities for future work.

  • Prepare and agree fee proposals, project scopes and delivery timescales.

  • Manage monthly invoicing, WIP and project finances, ensuring work is delivered within agreed budgets.

  • Keep project resource requirements up to date and support effective workload planning across the team.


Team and Line Management Responsibilities



  • Manage and mentor junior team members, including graduates and apprentices, providing technical guidance, support and regular feedback.

  • Conduct bi-monthly one-to-one meetings, probation reviews and performance reviews in line with company procedures.

  • Lead weekly team meetings, helping colleagues understand departmental priorities, company goals and key updates.

  • Support recruitment, onboarding, training and career development within the team.

  • Prepare annual training and development plans for team members and provide the support needed to achieve them.

  • Oversee team workload and productivity, ensuring work is allocated effectively and efficiently.

  • Review and approve timesheets, expenses, absence requests and hybrid working arrangements in line with company procedures.

  • Promote a positive, inclusive and supportive team culture, with a strong focus on employee wellbeing and retention.

  • Ensure the team's compliance with company policies, health and safety requirements and relevant ISO standards.


Key Skills & Attributes:



  • Proven experience delivering lighting designs, lighting impact assessments and/or daylight assessments within a consultancy environment.

  • Strong technical understanding of lighting analysis, modelling, surveys and mitigation strategies.

  • Experience using Dialux Evo, Lighting Reality, SketchUp and AutoCAD.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with confidence in report writing and client liaison.

  • Strong organisational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and competing deadlines.

  • Experience managing project budgets, WIP, invoicing and fee proposals.

  • A proactive approach to client care, business development and securing repeat work.

  • Experience mentoring and supporting junior team members.

  • Understanding of relevant health and safety responsibilities, including CDM Regulations 2015.

  • Valid CSCS card and a working understanding of site and construction safety.

  • Full, clean UK driving licence and access to a vehicle insured for business use.

  • Willingness to travel nationally and attend site visits, meetings and events as required.
