Job summary

SONI is seeking a Senior Lead Engineer in Belfast to lead advanced power system analyses and oversee critical transmission network datasets and tools. You will turn complex technical analyses into clear evidence to guide network and connection decisions and mentor colleagues across the Networks team.

Ideal candidates bring 5+ years in power systems engineering, strong modelling experience (PSSE/PowerFactory) and the ability to communicate insights to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Qualifications

• Degree in engineering or related discipline or equivalent professional experience.
• 5+ years’ post graduate experience in power systems engineering, network or connections planning.
• Strong technical knowledge of power systems, transmission networks and equipment.
• Experience undertaking power system studies including dynamical, harmonic or techno-economic analysis.
• Experience using power system modelling/analysis tools (PSSE, PowerFactory or equivalents).
• Experience analysing engineering data and using analytical/automation tools (Excel, Python, macros).
• Ability to prepare clear, evidence-based technical reports for stakeholders.
• Ability to explain complex technical information to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Ability to prioritise and manage multiple workstreams in a changing environment.
• Collaborative team player with strong communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead delivery of studies such as transient stability and harmonic assessments.
• Develop and maintain transmission network models with NIE Networks, EirGrid and others.
• Contribute technically to statutory publications (TDP NI, TFS, TIP) with NIE Networks.
• Identify opportunities to improve analysis processes and policies.
• Develop and maintain automation scripts and tools for network analysis.
• Build relationships with NIE Networks, EirGrid, Utility Regulator and government departments.
• Prepare clear, evidence-based technical reports and governance papers.
• Explain complex engineering analysis to stakeholders clearly.
• Provide mentoring and support knowledge sharing within the team.
• Support Head of Networks in planning and delivery of activities and projects.
