Are you a backend engineer with battle-hardened experience building systems that hold up under real-world complexity? We are looking for a Software Engineer (Java) to join our engineering-led consultancy.
We tackle the hardest software and infrastructure challenges for client organizations—problems often attempted and failed at several times. Founded and run by engineers, we value sound judgment, strong computer science fundamentals, and pragmatic delivery over chasing temporary tech trends.
- Role: Software Engineer (Java)
- Contract: Inside IR35 (up to £700 per day)
- Company Culture: Engineering-founded, consultant-led, pragmatic & delivery-focused
What You'll Do
- Design, build, and evolve high-throughput backend services and APIs that remain reliable in day-to-day operation.
- Build and operate event-driven/streaming systems with robust observability, testing, and failure handling.
- Tackle real-world engineering challenges: stabilize unreliable services, address testing gaps, reduce operational burden, and resolve performance bottlenecks.
- Make technical trade-offs explicit (latency vs. cost, speed vs. sustainability) and guide client teams to practical choices.
- Articulate solutions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders through design notes and technical conversations.
What We're Looking For
- Production Java Experience: Deep commercial experience building enterprise backend services using Java and the Spring Boot ecosystem.
- Event-Driven Architecture: Hands-on experience building streaming/event-driven systems with Kafka.
- Cloud & Containers: Cloud-native experience (AWS or GCP) along with container orchestration experience on Kubernetes.
- Distributed Systems: Solid grasp of computer science fundamentals, algorithms, and distributed systems trade-offs (consistency, correctness, idempotency).
- Delivery Discipline: Strong understanding of SDLC best practices, including TDD/testing, code reviews, and Continuous Delivery.
- Consulting Mindset: Excellent communication skills, the ability to express disagreement constructively, and a desire to help client teams succeed.
- Work alongside experienced engineers on technically demanding, high-impact problems.
- Environment that values deep fundamental knowledge, learning faster, and building safer.
- Genuine autonomy and support to grow both your technical depth and consulting capabilities.
