BBC Verify was established almost two years ago and brings together the BBC’s best analysts, fact-checkers, data specialists and designers from across domestic and global teams with expertise in data journalism, disinformation, and the latest open-source journalism and verification techniques.

It is now launching a new presence on the BBC News website which will be a live page showcasing the team’s work – providing an accessible, real-time display of BBC Verify’s activity. With transparency at its heart, this feed of BBC Verify material will promote the best of our content and also show the audience how we know what we know.

This Senior Designer role is within the BBC Verify live team, which brings its reporting into a real-time, live format (often known elsewhere as a “live blog”) to BBC audiences across the world.

You will develop and deliver digital infographic content, ensuring that it achieves the highest creative and editorial standards with adherence to BBC guidelines.

Main Responsibilities

As a Senior Designer on the team, you will work on a range of stories and will produce distinctive content for digital output.

You’ll work with the BBC Verify team to play a central role in open-source reporting - visualising verification, bringing satellite imagery to life, producing rich maps and executing everything from simple diagrams to complex data visualisations.

We are looking for someone who is creative and full of ideas and you’ll be able to remain calm under pressure and work collaboratively with others.

You will be part of the News Design team, which is a multi-platform, multi-disciplinary team within BBC News. We are responsible for the design and visualisation of a story end to end, across all platforms from our website and app to our flagship news broadcasts and social accounts. The team brings together digital designers, TV designers, and developers to provide compelling visual coverage of the biggest and most significant stories.

You will be responsible for translating editorial content and audience needs into innovative, inclusive experiences that work across all the platforms we deliver to - digital, broadcast and social platforms.

You’ll also work in collaboration with infographic designers, motion designers, UX designers, open-source analysts, journalists, data journalists, data scientists, TV producers, and web developers.

Are you the Right Candidate?

The successful candidate will have

  • A portfolio clearly demonstrating your ability to work effectively in the role: showing relevant design work, the process behind it, skills and experience.
  • Experience either in a newsroom or working in a setting where investigations are undertaken, or open-source intelligence techniques are used.
  • Information graphic and data visualisation design skills: the ability to create clear and engaging diagrams that clearly explain complex information to people. The ability to source, process and find stories in data. An understanding of dataviz techniques and which to use to most effectively present certain data and tell a story.
  • Map design skills: the ability to quickly and accurately create a variety of maps from simple country locator maps to complex satellite image-based maps with overlaid data. An understanding of relevant production tools and processes.
  • Visual Design skills, showing core abilities in type, colour, layout.
