Job summary

Arcadis is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer to join our Highways Civil Engineering team in Warrington, UK. You will take responsibility for delivering major highways projects while supporting project managers and technical teams.

Our Highways Civil Engineering team is seeking an experienced Senior Civil Engineer to join the team and strengthen our technical capability across a range of highways projects.

Role Description

As a Senior Civil Engineer, you will take responsibility for the delivery of defined project elements or work packages of major highways schemes, ensuring outputs meet quality, programme and cost expectations.

You will contribute strong technical expertise in highway design, particularly in alignment and digital design delivery, supporting Technical Managers and Project Managers while developing your leadership capability.

Role Accountabilities
  • Take responsibility for the delivery of defined project elements or work packages, ensuring alignment with scope, programme, cost and quality requirements.
  • Provide technical input and guidance to engineers and technicians, supporting delivery and development.
  • Apply advanced technical capability in highway geometric design, including horizontal and vertical alignment.
  • Act as a competent/advanced user of OpenRoads Designer (or equivalent), supporting digital design delivery.
  • Support the management of scope and assumptions, ensuring clarity in delivery requirements.
  • Prepare and review designs, calculations, reports and technical documentation.
  • Undertake design checks and verification activities appropriate to experience and responsibility.
  • Apply and support compliance with relevant design standards, including DMRB and, where applicable, AASHTO.
  • Support coordination of sub-consultants, surveys and technical inputs.
  • Assist in resource planning and workload coordination for assigned workstreams.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with project teams and clients.
  • Contribute to technical proposals and project‑related documentation.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Working towards, or recently achieved, Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
  • Experience delivering highways or infrastructure projects, including elements of complex schemes.
  • Demonstrable experience in highway alignment design and digital design delivery.
  • Proficient in OpenRoads Designer (or similar design software).
  • Experience in the identification and preparation of Departures from Standard.
  • Experience in the identification and application of value engineering.
  • Experience in delivery of Detailed Design work packages, including, but not limited to, Road Alignment, Road Restraint systems, Kerbs and footways, Site Clearance, Fencing and Accommodation Works.
  • Good working knowledge of DMRB and awareness of other international standards (e.g., AASHTO).
  • Practical understanding of project delivery, including scope, risk and change management principles.
  • Awareness of contractual frameworks (e.g., NEC) and their application within project delivery.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to support and guide junior team members.
  • Developing commercial awareness and understanding of project performance drivers.
