Job summary

If you have a Level 3 qualification in Healthcare or a Care Certificate with 6 months NHS experience, you will qualify for our Band 3 Senior Healthcare Assistant role.

The Senior HCA delivers higher-level fundamental clinical care to patients. Support and supervision are provided by a Registered Nurse or Registered Nursing Associate. The Senior HCA supports, supervises, and assesses new staff and delegates basic tasks to the HCA team. The role assists Nursing staff in ensuring the effective running of the ward/department.

Main duties of the job
  1. Assist patients with personal care, including hygiene and continence needs, encouraging independence where appropriate.
  2. Assist with nutritional needs—eating, drinking, menu selection, meal delivery, and special diets tailored to individual needs.
  3. Support patients to mobilise when appropriate.
  4. Undertake delegated clinical care duties relevant to the service, such as recording observations (blood pressure, blood glucose, pregnancy testing, wound observations, etc.), and simple wound dressings.
  5. Assist in the collection of specimens and record results after appropriate training.
  6. With training and discussion with the line manager, undertake extended skills like venepuncture and ECGs.
  7. Support patients during clinical procedures, ensuring their comfort and safety under supervision.
  8. Maintain accurate, up-to-date records in line with legal requirements.
