Job description

Senior Geotechnical Engineer | Deliver complex temporary works and geotechnical design on major London projects
17th September, 2026

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join the in‑house Construction Engineering Team of a leading specialist engineering contractor.

This is a key technical role focused on the delivery of geotechnical design and analysis for complex temporary works across high‑profile London projects.

The successful candidate will be involved from feasibility and tender stage through to detailed design and live project delivery, developing practical and buildable engineering solutions that respond to programme, construction methodology and site constraints.

The role would suit a geotechnical engineer who is comfortable challenging briefs, managing technical risk and working closely with project, construction and temporary works teams.

About the Company

The employer is a specialist engineering contractor with a strong reputation for delivering complex and innovative civil engineering projects across London.

The business delivers technically challenging projects involving demolition, piling, reinforced concrete structures, deep basements and complex temporary works.

A key strength of the business is its in‑house Construction Engineering Team, which provides specialist support across temporary works design, engineering analysis, digital modelling and technical compliance.

The company operates a self‑delivery model, allowing technical and operational teams to work closely together and ensuring engineering solutions are practical, buildable and aligned with site delivery.

The Role

As Senior Geotechnical Engineer, the successful candidate will take responsibility for geotechnical analysis and design across temporary works and complex construction projects.

The role will involve working across tender‑stage and live projects, developing designs that are technically robust, commercially considered and practical to construct.

You will collaborate closely with construction teams, project managers, temporary works engineers and design colleagues to ensure geotechnical risks are identified, understood and managed effectively.

Key Responsibilities: Geotechnical Design and Analysis
  • Undertake geotechnical analysis and design from feasibility through to detailed design
  • Support both tender‑stage and live project delivery
  • Develop practical, efficient and buildable engineering solutions
  • Carry out retaining wall, excavation and ground movement assessments
  • Undertake geotechnical design using relevant software, primarily WALLAP and PLAXIS 2D
  • Review and interpret ground investigation data and geotechnical parameters
  • Prepare design calculations, reports, sketches and technical documentation
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant geotechnical codes, standards and procedures
  • Challenge design assumptions and project briefs where necessary
  • Develop solutions that align with construction methodology and site constraints
Temporary Works and Construction Support
  • Provide geotechnical input into complex temporary works schemes
  • Support deep excavation, basement and retaining wall projects
  • Work closely with temporary works and construction engineering teams
  • Provide technical support during construction
  • Respond to site queries and review changing ground conditions where required
  • Support the development of safe and practical construction sequences
  • Consider buildability, programme and construction risk throughout the design process
  • Assist with design reviews and technical approvals
Risk Management
  • Identify geotechnical and construction risks at an early stage
  • Develop mitigation strategies and practical engineering solutions
  • Support design risk assessments and technical reviews
  • Ensure risks are communicated clearly to project and construction teams
  • Consider temporary and permanent condition risks within design development
  • Support a risk‑based approach to engineering and project delivery
Project and Team Collaboration
  • Work closely with project, construction and temporary works teams
  • Coordinate geotechnical input with structural and civil engineering disciplines
  • Attend design, technical and project meetings
  • Communicate complex technical information clearly to multidisciplinary teams
  • Support junior engineers and technical staff where appropriate
  • Contribute to continuous improvement within the Construction Engineering Team
  • Support knowledge sharing and technical development across the wider business
The role may involve geotechnical input into:
  • Deep basement temporary works
  • Retaining wall analysis and design
  • Secant and contiguous piled wall systems
  • Temporary propping arrangements
  • Deep excavations
  • Foundation and piling interfaces
  • Crane bases and heavy temporary works
  • Existing structure assessments
  • Construction sequencing and temporary stability
  • Complex inner‑city construction constraints
  • Ground movement and excavation impact assessments
About You

We are seeking a candidate with strong geotechnical design experience gained within a consultancy or contractor design environment.

You will be comfortable interpreting ground investigation data, carrying out geotechnical analysis and translating complex engineering outputs into practical and buildable construction solutions.

Applicants should demonstrate strong technical judgement, attention to detail and the ability to communicate effectively with both design and construction teams.

Essential Requirements
  • Ideally 5+ years' geotechnical design experience
  • Proven UK project experience is required

  • Experience undertaking geotechnical analysis and design
  • Competence using WALLAP and/or PLAXIS 2D
  • Strong understanding of relevant geotechnical design codes and standards
  • Ability to develop practical and buildable engineering solutions
  • Experience working across multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Good organisational and problem‑solving ability
  • Ability to manage multiple technical priorities and project deadlines
