Job summary

Elsevier in Oxford is hiring for a senior software-focused role designing, developing, and deploying cloud-hosted distributed applications. You will work with stakeholders in a fast-moving environment to gather requirements and deliver improvements that affect researchers submitting publications.

The role emphasizes Java/Spring, React or Angular, CI/CD, cloud tooling (Docker/Kubernetes/AWS), and a strong Agile/DevOps mindset.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency with Java, Spring or Spring Boot, and a JavaScript/TypeScript framework such as React or Angular.
  • Experience with build tools, Git, and CI tools like GitHub Actions or Jenkins.
  • Experience mentoring team members and sharing knowledge.
  • Experience with alerting/monitoring/logging tools such as New Relic/OpenSearch/Kibana.
  • Experience with IDEs such as IntelliJ or VS Code and refactoring tools.
  • Experience with test-driven development and mocking libraries (Jest or Mockito).
  • Experience documenting using Jira and Confluence.
  • Practical experience with Agile methods (Scrum/Kanban).
  • Familiarity with cloud design/development (Docker/Kubernetes/AWS).
  • Interest in AI-based solutions and exposure to DevOps tools like Terraform.
  • A collaborative approach and commitment to best practices.

Job description

Salary: £65,000 - 105,000 per year

Requirements:
  • Proficiency in most of the following, with willingness to learn the others: Java, Spring or Spring Boot, a JavaScript or TypeScript tool such as React or Angular, and SQL.
  • Experience with build tools, Git, and continuous integration tools such as GitHub Actions or Jenkins.
  • Experience supporting and mentoring team members, sharing knowledge, and helping colleagues build their skills.
  • Experience with alerting, monitoring, and logging tools such as New Relic, OpenSearch or Kibana, and Coralogix.
  • Experience with a modern IDE such as IntelliJ or VS Code, including use of refactoring tools.
  • Experience with test-driven development and mocking libraries such as Jest or Mockito.
  • Experience creating and updating technical documentation using collaborative tools such as Jira and Confluence.
  • Practical experience with Agile methods and delivery, including Scrum or Kanban.
  • Familiarity with designing and developing for cloud environments, such as Docker, Kubernetes, or AWS.
  • Interest in learning about or experience with AI-based solutions.
  • Some exposure to DevOps tools such as Terraform.
  • A collaborative approach, openness to improving team practices, eagerness to learn and grow, and commitment to industry best practices and standards.
