Job summary

Aviy, an invoicing product for people who did not start a business, is hiring a software engineer to own features end-to-end. You’ll ship from rough problem to measured outcomes, design data models, and build the screens on top of them using TypeScript.

Job description

Aviy is an invoicing product for people who did not start a business in order to do admin — electricians, photographers, tutors, consultants. They describe a job in a sentence and get back a finished, branded invoice.

We are a small engineering team, which means the person who designs a feature is usually the person who ships it and the person who looks after it afterwards. That is the job. It suits people who would rather own something end to end than work through a queue of tickets.

You would work across the surfaces customers touch every day: the document editor, the send-and-get-paid flow, and the assistant that drafts documents from plain English.

The work

In a typical month you might:

• Take a feature from a rough problem statement to something shipped and measured
• Design the data model for a new document type and build the screens on top of it
• Improve the editor that tens of thousands of businesses use as their main screen
• Review a colleague’s work properly, which here means reading it rather than approving it
• Share responsibility for keeping what you build running well

What we are looking for

Five or so years building production web applications, with real depth in TypeScript. You should be comfortable with relational databases and SQL rather than only an ORM.

More than any particular stack, we are looking for someone who finishes things: who measures whether the feature worked, notices the empty state nobody designed, and writes the error message a confused person can actually act on.

If you have worked somewhere small enough that you chose your own direction, you will recognise this job.

This might not be for you

If you prefer a well-defined ticket queue, a dedicated QA team and a clear boundary between your code and production, this will be uncomfortable. We work differently.

Where you work

This one is fully remote. We care where you are only insofar as the law does: you need the right to work in the UK or the US already, because there is no office attached to this job for us to sponsor you into. Beyond that, work from wherever you work best.

We overlap a few hours a day and write the rest down. Most decisions live in documents and pull requests rather than meetings, which is partly a philosophy and mostly a consequence of being spread across time zones.

Pay and the rest of it

$120,000–$170,000 a year, reviewed every year against the market for where you live, plus share options — everyone here owns a piece of the company.
