Job summary

ALTEN LTD - UK in Glasgow is seeking a Firmware Engineer to design and implement VHDL-based FPGA firmware for high-reliability embedded systems within the Defence sector.

You will collaborate with Hardware, Systems and Software engineers, perform timing analysis and validation, and support the full development lifecycle. A strong engineering background and 5+ years in firmware/FPGA are expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical/Systems Engineering or related field or equivalent military experience.
• 5+ years’ experience in Firmware or FPGA Design within Defence, Aerospace or Safety-Critical domains.
• Proven FPGA development with VHDL coding, synthesis, timing closure and simulation.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and implement VHDL-based FPGA firmware for high-reliability embedded systems.
• Conduct firmware architecture design, coding, simulation, and testing to standards.
• Collaborate with Hardware, Systems, and Software engineers for integration.
• Perform timing analysis, verification, and validation of FPGA designs using tools.
• Support system reviews, documentation, and configuration management across the lifecycle.
• Provide technical input and mentorship to junior engineers on standards and best practices.
