Job summary

HS2 Ltd. is seeking a Senior Environmental and Consents Advisor to support the Environmental Delivery team in Birmingham.

You will promote environmental awareness, ensure compliance with legislation, monitor site performance and drive continuous improvement across major assets including bridges and tunnels. The role requires an environmental/science degree and relevant experience, plus knowledge of EMS/ISO 14001 and multiple environmental disciplines.

Qualifications

• Degree in an environmental or scientific discipline or relevant career experience.
• Trained and experienced internal EMS/ISO 14001 auditor (preferred Lead Auditor).
• Strong knowledge in areas like Noise & vibration, Air Quality, Water, Ecology, Contaminated land, Waste & Resources.

Responsibilities

• Provide expert environmental advice to construction teams ensuring compliance with environmental legislation and project requirements.
• Monitor and report site environmental performance, manage inspections and incidents, and drive continual improvement through audits and corrective actions.
• Liaise with clients, stakeholders and the local community; mentor junior staff to deliver environmental and commercial outcomes.

Senior Environmental and Consents Advisor

HS2, Britain’s new high-speed railway is at peak construction. Balfour Beatty VINCI is HS2’s construction partner in the Midlands, responsible for delivering 90km of the route, from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and on to Handsacre in Staffordshire.

Current Opportunity: Senior Environment and Consents Advisor – Environment Delivery

Location:

Based in Birmingham - the Central Region runs from the east of Birmingham into the city centre, comprising Sublot Delta, 1B, 4 and 5S. More than 50% of the structures within IPT Area North are located in the Central Region. This region, which covers a complex urban environment, also includes the 3.5 mile twin bore Bromford Tunnel. It also includes Interchange Station, as well as crossing three major highways (A45, M6 and M42).

The Environmental Advisor will support construction teams by providing expert environmental advice, ensuring full compliance with environmental legislation and project requirements. The role involves promoting environmental awareness, monitoring and reporting site performance, managing inspections and incidents, and driving continuous improvement through audits and corrective actions. The post holder will work closely with clients, stakeholders, senior management, and the local community, while overseeing monitoring activities and mentoring junior environmental staff to deliver strong environmental and commercial outcomes for the project.

• Degree in an environmental or scientific discipline or relevant career experience
• Preferably a minimum 5 years experience as an Environmental Advisor working in relation to construction site activities, or minimum 2 years experience as Advisor on HS2 project, or be able to demonstrate equivalent competence
• Have deputised for a more senior role
• Thorough understanding of EMS including development of documents, procedures and processes
• Trained and experienced internal ISO 14001 auditor (preferred Lead Auditor) Practitioner IEMA (or equivalent level of membership with a relevant professional body)
• Has strong knowledge, skills, experience and training in all or most of the following areas: Project certification (e.g. BREEAM); Noise & vibration; Air Quality; Water; Ecology; Archaeology; Carbon; Pollution Prevention; Waste & Resources; Contaminated land; Landscaping; Soils; and Public Liaison
