Job summary

clearer.io, a global ecommerce technology company, is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead multiple teams into AI-native, agentic software delivery for thousands of merchants worldwide.

You’ll work from our Leicester city centre office three days a week with two days remote, shape long-term technical strategy, own roadmaps for large-scale systems, and drive AI maturity and security standards across teams.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in software engineering, with 4+ years in leadership.
• Degree in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent.
• Track record of scaling engineering orgs across multiple teams.
• Deep knowledge of large-scale system design and cloud-native architecture.
• Hands-on AI development tooling experience and cost/security tradeoffs.
• Experience balancing technical debt, reliability and feature delivery.
• Experience managing budgets and headcount, including AI tooling spend.

We're looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead multiple teams into AI-native, agentic software delivery — building products used by thousands of eCommerce merchants worldwide. We're not hiring for where engineering was. We're hiring for where it's going.

You'll lead several engineering teams and their managers, and shape how we build software as AI reshapes the craft. From spec to delivery, you'll move us toward agentic and multi-agent workflows — with the quality, security and cost controls to back them up. We build on and around Shopify, which moves just as fast, so staying current isn't a nice-to-have here. It's the job.
You'll work from our Leicester city centre office three days a week, with two days remote.

what you'll do:

• Lead and grow multiple engineering teams and their managers, building a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.
• Set long-term technical strategy with the architecture team and senior leadership, so engineering moves in step with company goals.
• Own roadmaps for complex, distributed, high-traffic systems — with resilience, observability and performance built in at scale.
• Raise AI maturity across your teams against our maturity model, moving from prompt, context and harness practices to agentic loops and multi-agent workflows. Keep building with new tools yourself so you stay sharp.
• Drive adoption of our AI development standards, including quality controls for AI-generated code. Manage AI tooling spend against the value it delivers, and elevate tooling gaps that block progress.
• Manage cross-team dependencies and handoffs, especially as agentic workflows change how work moves between teams.
• Lead hiring, performance and leadership development — growing your managers' AI fluency and recognising progress in performance and promotion decisions.
• Keep us secure and compliant, including governing what data AI tools and models can access.

what you'll bring

• 8+ years in software engineering, including 4+ years in leadership, ideally managing managers.
• A degree in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent experience.
• A track record of scaling engineering organisations and landing new practices across multiple teams.
• Deep knowledge of large-scale system design, microservices and cloud-native architecture.
• Recent hands-on experience building working apps or tools with AI development tooling, and a clear view of its cost, security and quality tradeoffs.
• Experience balancing tech debt, reliability and feature delivery.
• Experience managing budgets, headcount and resourcing, including AI tooling and token spend.
• The influence to shape executive decisions and product strategy, and the coaching skills to grow strong leaders.

Nice to have :

• Experience leading agentic workflows
• eCommerce experience, especially with Shopify
