Job Description: Senior Civil Engineer
The Senior Engineer plays a key role in overseeing civil engineering projects with an annual turnover of £10 million. This individual is responsible for the technical management and execution of the project while leading a team of 2 to 4 section engineers, ensuring efficiency, quality, and compliance throughout the construction process.
Key Responsibilities & Objectives
- Safety, Health, Environment & Sustainability
- Prepare, check / approve method statements and risk assessments, ensuring appropriate priority is given to the public and securing third-party approvals where necessary.
- Assist with the preparation of project environmental procedures and ensure systems are implemented to satisfy contractual and statutory requirements, liaising with third parties such as the Environmental Agency.
- Dimensional/Spatial Control
- Review the achievability, suitability, and compatibility of specified tolerances and amend as required.
- Review and modify proposed construction methods to ensure compliance with specified tolerances.
- Determine and implement the most appropriate methods for primary & secondary control on the project.
- Supervise, train, and ensure competence of personnel carrying out dimensional control tasks.
- Provide advice and assistance in resolving survey and dimensional control issues.
- Workmanship, Quality, Inspection & Testing
- Review Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs) to ensure correct interpretation of quality requirements and improve as necessary.
- Ensure subcontractors' quality procedures comply with company and contract requirements, conducting audits as needed.
- Determine remedial actions for non-conformances, ensuring their approval and implementation.
- Ensure NCRs are satisfactorily closed out and appropriate controls are in place to prevent reoccurrence.
- Produce construction/installation details that improve buildability and minimize future construction issues.
- Manage the production of quality assurance documentation for construction records.
- Ensure company and project quality procedures are implemented effectively.
- Information, Change Control & Records
- Record change requests from clients, including any abortive work resulting from these requests.
- Ensure that information provided accounts for any changes.
- Assist the project engineer in these tasks as per their role.
- Permanent Works Materials, Products, Plant & Systems
- Assist the project engineer as per their role.
- Construction Methods, Practices and Innovation
- Challenge existing methods and procedures.
- Evaluate alternative solutions and proposed innovations for effectiveness.
- Drive improvements in software development for the facility.
- Initiate 3D modeling to develop methods and resolve issues.
- Perform value engineering, understanding financial and client implications.
- Find alternative solutions to improve productivity, quality, or safety.
- Develop method statements for complex and high-risk operations.
- Approve and evaluate method statements and risk assessments, suggesting improvements.
- Develop site practices ensuring adherence to method statements.
- Temporary Works/Systems & Cranes
- Produce design briefs for temporary works.
- Serve as Temporary Works Inspector (TWI) and Coordinator (TWC) for complex temporary works.
- Apply standard temporary works design rules.
- Design Process, Coordination and Management
- Review early-stage model detailing for compliance.
- Guide detailers for alignment with facility requirements.
- Lead a team of Digital Engineers and manage external drafting teams.
- Review and approve drawings, considering buildability and temporary works.
- Maintain document control via Common Data Environments.
- Report on design status regularly.
- Assist the project engineer as needed.
- Engineering Knowledge – Capture, Sharing & Using
- Provide value engineering solutions.
- Understand product handling, storage, and transport requirements.
- Understand manufacturing capabilities for reinforcement cages.
- Capture and utilize facility knowledge for continuous improvement.
