Job Description: Senior Civil Engineer

The Senior Engineer plays a key role in overseeing civil engineering projects with an annual turnover of £10 million. This individual is responsible for the technical management and execution of the project while leading a team of 2 to 4 section engineers, ensuring efficiency, quality, and compliance throughout the construction process.

Key Responsibilities & Objectives

1. Safety, Health, Environment & Sustainability
2. Prepare, check / approve method statements and risk assessments, ensuring appropriate priority is given to the public and securing third-party approvals where necessary.
3. Assist with the preparation of project environmental procedures and ensure systems are implemented to satisfy contractual and statutory requirements, liaising with third parties such as the Environmental Agency.
4. Dimensional/Spatial Control
5. Review the achievability, suitability, and compatibility of specified tolerances and amend as required.
6. Review and modify proposed construction methods to ensure compliance with specified tolerances.
7. Determine and implement the most appropriate methods for primary & secondary control on the project.
8. Supervise, train, and ensure competence of personnel carrying out dimensional control tasks.
9. Provide advice and assistance in resolving survey and dimensional control issues.
10. Workmanship, Quality, Inspection & Testing
11. Review Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs) to ensure correct interpretation of quality requirements and improve as necessary.
12. Ensure subcontractors' quality procedures comply with company and contract requirements, conducting audits as needed.
13. Determine remedial actions for non-conformances, ensuring their approval and implementation.
14. Ensure NCRs are satisfactorily closed out and appropriate controls are in place to prevent reoccurrence.
15. Produce construction/installation details that improve buildability and minimize future construction issues.
16. Manage the production of quality assurance documentation for construction records.
17. Ensure company and project quality procedures are implemented effectively.
18. Information, Change Control & Records
19. Record change requests from clients, including any abortive work resulting from these requests.
20. Ensure that information provided accounts for any changes.
21. Assist the project engineer in these tasks as per their role.
22. Permanent Works Materials, Products, Plant & Systems
23. Assist the project engineer as per their role.
24. Construction Methods, Practices and Innovation
25. Challenge existing methods and procedures.
26. Evaluate alternative solutions and proposed innovations for effectiveness.
27. Drive improvements in software development for the facility.
28. Initiate 3D modeling to develop methods and resolve issues.
29. Perform value engineering, understanding financial and client implications.
30. Find alternative solutions to improve productivity, quality, or safety.
31. Develop method statements for complex and high-risk operations.
32. Approve and evaluate method statements and risk assessments, suggesting improvements.
33. Develop site practices ensuring adherence to method statements.
34. Temporary Works/Systems & Cranes
35. Produce design briefs for temporary works.
36. Serve as Temporary Works Inspector (TWI) and Coordinator (TWC) for complex temporary works.
37. Apply standard temporary works design rules.
38. Design Process, Coordination and Management
39. Review early-stage model detailing for compliance.
40. Guide detailers for alignment with facility requirements.
41. Lead a team of Digital Engineers and manage external drafting teams.
42. Review and approve drawings, considering buildability and temporary works.
43. Maintain document control via Common Data Environments.
44. Report on design status regularly.
45. Assist the project engineer as needed.
46. Engineering Knowledge – Capture, Sharing & Using
47. Provide value engineering solutions.
48. Understand product handling, storage, and transport requirements.
49. Understand manufacturing capabilities for reinforcement cages.
50. Capture and utilize facility knowledge for continuous improvement.
