Job description

The Senior Engineer plays a key role in overseeing civil engineering projects with an annual turnover of £10 million.

This individual is responsible for the technical management and execution of the project while leading a team of 2 to 4 section engineers, ensuring efficiency, quality, and compliance throughout the construction process.



Key Responsibilities & Objectives:

1. Safety, Health, Environment & Sustainability

  • Prepare, check / approve method statements and risk assessments, ensuring appropriate priority is given to the public and that third-party approvals are obtained where necessary.
  • Assist with the preparation of project environmental procedures and ensure systems are implemented to satisfy contractual and statutory requirements, liaising with third parties such as the Environmental Agency.

2. Dimensional/Spatial Control

  • Review the achievability, suitability, and compatibility of specified tolerances and amend as required.
  • Review and modify proposed construction methods to ensure compliance with specified or stated tolerances.
  • Determine and implement the most appropriate methods for primary & secondary control on the project.
  • Supervise, train, and ensure competence of those carrying out dimensional control tasks.
  • Provide advice and assistance in resolving survey and dimensional control issues.

3. Workmanship, Quality, Inspection & Testing

  • Review ITPs to ensure they correctly interpret the specified quality requirements and improve them as necessary.
  • Ensure subcontractors' quality procedures comply with company/contract quality requirements and carry out audits as necessary.
  • Determine remedial actions for non-conformances and ensure their approval and implementation.
  • Ensure NCRs are satisfactorily closed out and appropriate controls are applied to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Produce construction/installation details to improve buildability, compatibility, and minimize risk of later issues.
  • Manage the production of quality assurance information for construction records.
  • Ensure company and project quality requirements procedures are implemented.

4. Information, Change Control & Records

  • Record change requests from the client, including any abortive work resulting from the request.
  • Ensure information provided to the facility accounts for any change.
  • Assist the project engineer with this as per their role.

5. Permanent Works Materials, Products, Plant & Systems

  • Assist the project engineer with this as per their role.

6. Construction Methods, Practices and Innovation

  • Challenge existing methods and procedures being used.
  • Evaluate alternative solutions and proposed innovations to determine if they are more effective than current methods.
  • Drive priority for improvement to software developed for the facility.
  • Initiate 3D modelling to develop methods, clarify issues, and resolve method-related problems.
  • Carry out value engineering, understanding the financial and client implications of de-scoping, and strive to add value to projects.
  • Find alternative solutions to improve productivity, quality, or safety, helping to create best practices.
  • Produce method statements for complex and high-risk operations affecting the public.
  • Approve method statements and risk assessments, evaluate them, and suggest improvements.
  • Develop site practices to ensure method statements are always followed.

7. Temporary Works/Systems & Cranes

  • Produce design briefs for temporary works.
  • Carry out the role of Temporary Works Inspector (TWI) for complex temporary works, ensuring compliance with procedures.
  • Serve as Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) for projects involving standard temporary works, and as Deputy TWC for complex projects.
  • Apply standard temporary works design rules across various products.

8. Design Process, Coordination and Management

  • Attend early-stage model reviews and confirm compliance with facility capability.
  • Guide detailers on aligning cages with facility requirements.
  • Input into cage triage and sequencing.
  • Lead a team of Digital Engineers.
  • Provide forecasts of work for external parties.
  • Manage external teams drafting engineering drawings.
  • Review and approve drawings considering buildability, temporary works, and facility requirements.
  • Maintain document control via Common Data Environments.
  • Report on design status regularly.
  • Assist the project engineer as per their role.

9. Engineering Knowledge – Capture, Sharing & Using

  • Provide value engineering solutions to engineering problems.
  • Ensure lifting, handling, storage, and transport requirements are captured and communicated in temporary works design and drawings.
  • Understand manufacturing plant and equipment capabilities and constraints for reinforcement cages.
  • Capture facility knowledge for continuous improvement, innovation, and capability enhancement.
