Job summary

Amey is seeking a permanent Senior Engineer to join its Consulting Structures Team in Nottingham on a hybrid basis with shared offices in nearby regions. You’ll lead design teams on Bridges/Highways schemes, mentor junior engineers, and drive bid and delivery activities while maintaining safety and quality standards.

You should bring substantial experience in structures, ownership of deliverables, and strong software knowledge (LUSAS, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design).

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an appropriate subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning.
• Ability to produce and check deliverables to relevant standards for client schemes.
• Experience in Bridges/Highways Structures or equivalent engineering roles.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions.
• Take ownership of projects from quotation to handover and manage workloads.
• Prepare and check designs, calculations and drawings to quality, cost and programme criteria.
• Oversee junior staff and contribute to their professional development.

The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Senior Engineer to join our Consulting Structures Team in Nottingham. This is a hybrid role and with shared office space in Nottingham, Birmingham, Telford we welcome applications from Bridge Engineers across these regions.

National Highways have named Amey Consulting as a Design partner to support the delivery of the largest and most comprehensive renewals programme that National Highways have ever launched. The £3.6bn Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF), as well as the Severn Bridges Infrastructure Maintenance (SBIM) Contract, enables National Highways to procure Design and Construction services across the Strategic Road Network for the next 6 years and beyond.

The role

Responsibilities

As a Senior Engineer you will provide effective support and assistance to your Design Team Leader on a variety of Structures schemes whilst taking the lead on projects and mentoring junior engineers and technicians. Responsibilities include:

• Leading a team to producing technically sound engineering solutions.
• Taking ownership and leading projects from start to finish, from preparing the quotation all the way to handover.
• Preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the criteria of quality, cost and programme.
• Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions.
• Contributing to the professional development of junior staff and acting as a Supervising Civil Engineer or Delegated Engineer.
• Liaising with Client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, and responding to queries.
• Managing a small, locally based single discipline technical team and taking responsibility for delivery of their workload.
• Contributing to the preparation of bids and general work winning function.
• Drive effective Health and Safety practices within the team.

What You Will Bring To Us

• Developed experience and expertise within Bridges/Highways Structures field, probably gained in an Engineer role or equivalent.
• An ability to produce or oversee the production of technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and Client’s requirements.
• Takes ownership for the preparation and checking of deliverables and can check deliverables to a reasonable standard.
• Very good working knowledge of relevant software and similar analytical tools (e.g LUSAS and Autodesk Structural Bridge Design).
• Demonstrates good commercial awareness.
• Has a good understanding of CDM and risk assessment.
• Substantially experienced in the management and communication of hazards and risks on projects and ensures appropriate risk mitigation and transference has been applied.
• Demonstrates a good understanding of interface management, and ensures own deliverables align with deliverables produced by other disciplines.
• Incorporated or Chartered status or an equivalent professional license gained through the professional institution to which the individual is aligned is desirable and may be essential on particular contracts.
