Job description

Senior Embedded Systems Engineer (Drive-by-Wire / PLC) — First Key Hire

Circa £80k+, London based

Want to work for an advanced start up with acquired IP requiring an experienced Senior Embedded Systems Engineer to become the first dedicated DBW & control integration hire? This is a high-ownership role where you’ll lead the embedded control capability across the autonomous vehicle and industrial automation platforms, then grow and mentor a team around you as they scale.

You’ll be responsible for designing, integrating, and validating Drive-by-Wire (DBW) and PLC-based control systems that deliver safe, precise actuation of steering, braking, propulsion, and other critical subsystems. Working at the intersection of embedded software, mechatronics, and systems engineering, you’ll ensure our autonomy stack connects seamlessly into real-world hardware through robust control, comms, and safety frameworks.

What you’ll do
  • Own end-to-end DBW + PLC control system design, integration, and commissioning.
  • Build system architecture linking autonomy, navigation, and control with embedded/PLC hardware.
  • Develop and validate control algorithms for smooth, responsive, safe actuation.
  • Implement comms across ECUs/sensors (CAN, LIN, EtherCAT, FlexRay, Modbus, etc.).
  • Lead HIL/SIL integration testing and real-world validation.
  • Drive functional safety practices and compliance (ISO 26262, IEC 61508, SOTIF).
  • Define diagnostics, redundancy, and fail-safe strategies.
  • Set engineering standards and documentation for certification and future team growth.
Experience required
  • Degree in Electrical / Mechatronic / Control / Automotive / Robotics Engineering (or similar).
  • 4–5+ years in embedded integration, commissioning, or PLC control environments.
  • Strong C/C++ embedded skills and PLC tools (e.g., CoDeSys).
  • Real-time control + fieldbus communication experience.
  • Proven delivery in safety-critical systems; working knowledge of ISO 26262 and/or IEC 61508.
Why join

You’ll own a core capability, shape technical direction, work on cutting-edge autonomous platforms, and step into a clear path to build and lead your own team.
