In this hybrid role, you will spend approximately 2–3 days a week on-site in Teddington, and 2–3 days working remotely. We value your work-life balance and are open to discussing flexible or part-time working arrangements to accommodate your needs.

As our Senior Electronics Engineer, you will provide specialist expertise in instrumentation and automation systems design, whilst being responsible for ensuring compliance with legislation and standards of products provided by NPL. Your work will have a tangible impact on our business and the UK as a whole. You will collaborate with a diverse team of professionals, celebrating the unique contributions of everyone.

As a senior team member, you'll supervise less experienced colleagues—sharing your knowledge and motivating them to improve. As an expert in your field, you'll provide daily design solutions and consultancy services across the department.

What you’ll be doing:

  1. Identifying and assisting in capturing customer requirements
  2. Designing automation, instrumentation, and safety systems and products
  3. Transferring requirements into designs and specifications
  4. Installing, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning automation systems
  5. Sourcing and testing instrumentation to prove suitability for application
  6. Preparing design risk assessments
  7. Issuing electrical wiring and interconnection drawings using CAD
  8. Managing and maintaining system documentation
  9. Checking designs and documentation for correctness and compliance with standards
  10. Working with suitable suppliers of equipment, services, and materials

Please note, this role is known internally as 'Senior Design Engineer'.

About You

We believe that diversity and unique perspectives are key to the success of our engineering projects. We particularly encourage applications from candidates underrepresented in STEM disciplines, including women, disabled individuals, Black, Asian, and minority ethnic candidates, as well as Armed Forces service leavers transitioning into the civilian workforce.

Skills and experience you can bring to the role include:

  • Designing electrical automation, instrumentation, and safety systems
  • Small Signal Electronics
  • Microcontrollers
  • Prototype testing and validation
  • Creating and interpreting electrical schematics
  • Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Design
  • Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) Design
  • Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) Design
  • Digital Signal Processors (DSP) Design
  • Sizing protection components and cables
  • BSc degree qualification in Electrical, Electronic, or Control Engineering or equivalent experience

Additional preferred experience includes applying electrical safety standards (BS/EN 61010-1).

If this role sounds like a good fit, we look forward to hearing from you. In return, we offer an attractive salary + benefits package and the opportunity to join a passionate, welcoming team.

Note: We actively recruit candidates from all backgrounds. However, due to the nature of our work, specific departments may have more stringent nationality, residency, and security requirements. You will be asked about this during the recruitment process. To work at NPL, you will need to obtain BPSS security clearance.
